You can get an aftermarket tach with the white AC face for under $100 now.  The tach cable plugs into the back of the governor housing right under where the distributor mounts.  Mike

If the tractor did not have a tach before, there would not be a fitting on the end of the distributor.  This is needed to run the tach.  I am looking for one for a 59 D14 is anyone has one.

I have a '59 D17 as well.  I bought a new cable and housing from AGCO last fall.  Ouch.  Cable and housing was I think $56.  You will need the threaded adapter and also the part that connects the square cable end to the slotted end of the governor shaft.
I bought part of the fitting thingy that goes on the distributor from Norm last week, you might check with him, he may have more parts.  He also told me that you can use a keyed cable end instead of the square end, it eliminates one part.
