What is a usable B/C side mount mower worth? Friend has one that I need to go look at and I want one. Don't want to rip him off but don't want to overpay either. I know it has been setting for several years.

Mine came with my C, so I can't say from experience. But I've read where folks on here have received them for free, or paid as much as $150 for one in good working condition. Send me a PM if you need any parts, I've parted mine out.

I've paid anywhere from $33.00 to $450.00 with a running tractor attached to it!

My experience is the "free to $150" range. I never bought a $150 mower, but I would think it would have to have everything in tip-top order.
Check the bearing on the tractor end of the pitman, I think last I knew, it was about $225 from AGCO. If that bearing is shot, the price declines dramatically.

Bear in mind that most of these mowers are VERY worn out and will not perform well without a significant amount of rebuilding and new parts. Even if it only needs a new knife and a couple of guards, you will have more than $150 in repair parts. Does this mean that the B/C mowers are not worth messing with? Not at all. I took three mowers and probably close to $300 worth of new parts and built one good one that will easily cut through anything mowable in second gear. It has mown several thousand dollars worth of hay, and I consider it to have paid for itself in the first season I used it. Don't expect to get the same result with a $50 or $150 mower though, unless you are very lucky.

Be sure to get the pulley that goes on the PTO with it, these seem to be hard to find, There are 3 types 1 1/8 ,shaft 1 3/8 shaft sigle belt and the double groove 1 3/8 for the CA mower. These are great mowers, but as stated above you will need parts if you use it. I have 1 I use and 2 for parts 2 were free come and get um and 1 I traded a set ofB cultivators for. Cal in ct

I sold one last year for $75. It was in working condition but it could have used some new sickles as the ones that were on there were dull. I got it with a parts tractor and the pitman arm had rotted off from sitting so long. I put a new pitman arm on it and got it all working good, but with the dull sickles, it would jam up from time to time. I still have a #3 mower that will fit on a B and I have the mounting brackets for it, but I haven't gotten a chance to use it yet.

Wendel, Pay close attention to what Brett says. These are excellent mowers if you want hay. In fact when we first sold them (1930's - 1950's) they were all we had for any type of mowing, but they required a lot of maintenance to do a good job - guards, sickle sections, ledger plates, hold down clamps, pitman bearing, pitman connecting part, and many others I have long since forgotten. You may want to consider a rotary style mower. A lot less maintenance
