Tractorman,
I rebuilt and redecked this model 601 gear last summer...not sure how to find the thread from then.
edit: I searched for the thread and couldn't find it. I think it was posted near the end of the old forum.

Thanks, Chad! It was a fun project. Have you had a chance to do any more on your gear? If I remember right yours is in pretty good original condition.
I found the link off the old forum for Tractorman:

I plan to redo my wagon this year (a 701). How did you do the stencil of the number?? That was an incredible job!

Thanks for the nice comments, guys.
EPALLIS,
Luckily, there was some remnant of the old model number stencil. I traced the outline on a piece of vellum, then cleaned it up on the drafting table:
I took this drawing/tracing to the local sign shop. They have a vinyl-die cut lettering machine. They scanned the drawing and made a perfect stencil out of adhesive-backed vinyl. This way I had no bleed-through creeping underneath the stencil at all when I spray-painted over it, and the original factory model number is reproduced as closely as I could reasonably get it.

Hey Chad,
Your wagon looks nice and straight, everything is there including the decal remnants and the metal nameplate. It took me over a year to find mine, you'll have a hoot when you get around to yours.
I think if you hit "enter" a time or two between cut-and-pasted photo links, that should cause them to separate in the post, but keep in mind I also consider dining at the Waffle House to be "healthy eating".

I have 2 Allis running gears and am repainting the one under the kicker wagon. I should redo the one under the bin wagon also but theres this thing about time. I have an Electric gear under another bin wagon that is orange, a neighboe has 2 nice Electric wagons that are red ( orginal ) Does anyone know if they came in different colors or was it just painted to match the J&M bin at some time? Thanks...Harvey

We had two electric gears under gravity bins - one orange, one red. I think they changed their primary color at some time over the years. -John

I have a 701 gear that must be a few years newer because it has the newer A-C decal on the back and the triangular logo on the side next to where it says 701. I know it has never been repainted as I am the second owner. The guy I bought it from has 5 more A-C running gears, he purcased them all brand new. He will not part with any more yet. He also has an A-C silage blower still hooked to his silo pipe that hasn't been used for 15 years, I imagine it's rusted out by now.

AllisFreak MN,
If you look closely at the illustration in Norm Swinford's A-C Farm Equipment book, an A-C triangle logo is visible next to the model number just as you decribe on your wagon. In a listing of the models offered, the entry for the 701 gear reads: "Model 701 - 7 ton for power feed boxes".
I thought about adding that decal there, it would look cool. I refrained because I didn't think it would be original. No doubt you're correct about the later model wagons having this decal.

Bill: I checked the book and yes, you are correct. I would like to make mine look as nice as yours someday, just have to make time to do it I guess. You did an awesome job on your 601.

Chad WI: Nice! The paint and decals look pretty darn good on that 505. Those are the exact A-C decals that are on my 701. I wonder if you can still get those?

EPALLIS,
If you mean the rear decal on my 601, it's the same as a common WD/WD45 hood decal. As I recall that one came from Maple-Hunter, but Jim Danforth, Norm, Tony & Barb and most of the vendors here offer that same decal.

Tom, My understanding is that the first digit in the model number, in your case a 7 means that AC wagon is a 7 ton. I would go with a 701 for your model. Danny

For those who can't get enough wagon information, here are partial scans of the brochure for models 405, 505 and 605 running gears:

I was kinda hoping it was mating season for AC running gears. That would sure help with the shortage!

I’ve enjoyed learning a little bit more about the Allis Chalmers’ running gear models. I came in to one quite by accident. When I got this home I found the ID tag under several layers of paint. Trying to learn more about it and want to try to bring it back to its original condition for use in hayrides. Not quite sure how I’m going to build it out. I am curious about what style/brand tires would’ve been original. Only two of the four wheel hubs have zerk fittings in the caps. Not sure if that’s original. Also one wheel was replaced. The stem comes out from the inside on that one. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thank you – Ben

Stockman (Ben), your wagon gear’s ID tag reads, “cat no, 2013920” which corresponds to an AC 701 model. It’s ID’s other info reads, “serial 7 11933” corresponds to it being a 7 ton size with sequential number of 11933 which positions it near the beginning of its production run (11482-14042) which began in 1965ish or there about? I say that because it received the “newer AC triangle logo” decal which debuted in 1965.

The AC 701 gear could have been supplied with a number of tire/rim options. It's August of 1966 sales brochure list the following wheels(rims) sizes (Inch diameter x inch width) then probable tire sizes; 14 x 6, (G78-14s,8.5-14?) 15 x 6, (9.5-15?) 16 x 6.5, (7.5-16?) 15 x 8, (11-15?) flotations 15 x 10, (11-15,12.5-15?)flotations 15 x 5.5 (6.5-15?,7.5-15?) Your grease zerk hubs would have been an add-on as I don’t believe that to be original.
All hubs & wheels should include a common “EWC” stamped ID. EWC Q709 is their hub ID. Their spindle size is 1 3/4” welded into their frames. The Q709 bearings are as follows; 1 3/8” LM48548/LM48510,inner 1 1/4” LM67048/LM67010,outer, N41461S(National), CR 15190(Chicago Rawhide, 901283, hub seal.

Appreciate that information! I did build it out and currently have the same wheel configuration as when I bought it. If I ever have to change the tires I’ll probably double back on the wheel question. Thanks again for the input

Nice! Thanks for sharing the pic! Stockman is correct, I never saw any hubs with zerks. Those would be an add on or a replacement. Not original. Luv seeing these wagon gears brought back to life! It is appreciated!!
