I have a chance to buy a friends IH W-400. I had never heard of such a thing I have a farmall 400 and I was talking about it and he said he had one he wanted to get rid of so I went to look at it and it is a standard tread tractor. it is in excelent shape as far as the tin goes and all the little stamped name plates are still on it. it has the good rubber on back, new on front, new battery last summer, Torque Amp works hi and low, power steering, single remote hook up, always had good oil pressure (never droped under half way up gauge even at idle), he said it had no noticeable smoke out the breather and is still on 6-volt. His dad had it since the 60s and he got when his dad quit farming. His kids want nothing to do with it so he thought I might. The only problem could be a big one but might be simple to fix, the engine siezed up while sitting for about 3 months after he finished brush hogging. I know it sound unlikely but I believe him, he has been a friend of the family for years. He said he wanted $800 for it but I want to make sure it is worth the money as things are tight but I think it would be a decent tractor to restore then use and show. I like my Farmall 400 except for it uses about twice the fuel of one of my WD-45s and does the same amount of work. Are these common tractors and if not are parts available

Any help or opinions are apreciated
and sorry for the off-color post
Denis

Hi Denis
Kind of a rare tractor by IH standards only 2,070 made. Guy Fay's hundred series book has a nice picture of one of them on the cover. The engine is common to any 400 row crop so parts for them are cheap and plentiful. I get in my car and drive you to (3) of them less than 30 minutes from my house and I can't even do that with a D15 out here.
I would expect a large number of them survived since most of them didn't have to do cattle chores like many of the row crops did. This tractors older brothers are the W-6,
Super W-6, Super W-6TA,  the W-400 that became the W-450.

That's cheap. Buy it and let it soak. It should free right up. What a deal. I want it.

Wow, a W-400 in Michigan!! Most of these ended up in Canada and out west. Buy it! I have the September/October 2007 issue of Antique Power and this tractor was the cover story. Its got a six page write up. Let me know if you need any info from it. Let me know when and where you might be showing it. I might be so inclined to come see it.

If I get it I would show it at the National Threshers Reunion in Wauseon OH. and the Michigan Steam Engine and Threshers club show in Mason MI, these are the only shows i visit every year
