My '45 was starting on the first or second pull on the starter. Put new points, coil and condensor in and now I have to crank it over several time to get it started. Set the points at .020. Am I getting someting set wrong or is there something else I'm overlooking? thanks, Dave

That is the correct setting. Even if you're out a bit it should still start.

Take a close look inside the distributor. Are there any loose connections or signs of arcing. Are the points surfaces clean? (any oil will act as an insulator and make performance poor).....An easy way to clean them is put a thick piece of paper between them and pull it out a few times. It should be something simple......good luck.........O_O

P.S. Verify the coil is correct for the voltage your tractor is set up for.

Is a six volt coil, as the system is. I'll double check the points to ensure they are clean and set properly. Just frustrating to "fix" something and it doesn't start as well as before. Runs good after it is started and fires right up when the engine is warm, just slower starting cold now.

I had the exact same thing happen to me on an Oliver 1650 and I had to reset the timing. I had people tell me it wasn't possible but it was, corrected timing(only a little off) and it went back to starting normally.

How do you set the timing on the '45?

There is a round hole on the left side of the torque tube in line with the flywheel. There is a "Fire" line stamped into the rim of the flywheel. Just center it in the hole with a timing light. You may need to find the marks and put a dab of paint on them so they show up better. They aren't stamped very deep.

Brian - I believe you are refering to a B, C, CA. On the WD and 45 , you check timing thru the plate on the bottom of bellhousing. If you change points you need to check timing with a timing light. All points are not the same. The wear block can be slightly different. - AL

Put the old coil back on and see if it changes anything. If not place the old condensor back and see if it fixes the problem. We have had bad condensors right out of the box before esp. with everything being made over seas.

I thought first of the condensor. I have heard of new ones being bad. To set the timing, I crack the clamp loose on the distributor and find the extremes(advanced and retarded). Then advance to the extreme(when it starts fluttering) and back off about 1/6 of the way to the retarded extreme. After warming the engine up, you should be able to run full throttle, back off to an idle fast and get a good backfire out of it.
