What are the main differences between a series 4 D17 and the other series?  Is it just the live hydraulic pump in the place of the belt pulley hole, but what else is there?   Thanks.

ALONG THOSE LINES .. LOOKIN FOR A NICE D -17  THAT COULD BED WITH MY D-15   ON A NIGHTLY BASIS .. IT WOULD HAVE TO BE A SERIES 4  AND HAVE A 3 POINT ..

Chuck -  just comparing the Series III to Series IV changes - yes the independent hydraulics driving via a hollow quill shaft from the flywheel to the old belt pulley location.  Hydraulic fluid capacity I think was increased by 2 quarts in the torque tube.  Cessna type hydraulic controls were moved from the left steering column to the right fender side.  Traction booster lever & depth control levers were right behind them.  Controls included lift arms and one or two DUAL remote rams at standard industry pressure (approx 2200 psi).

Fender toolbox was moved from right to left fender.  Rear worklight moved from behind the seat to the rear of the left fender. 

Optional Cat. 2 three-point was available.  Snap coupler hitch was standard.  The snap coupler drawbar bail was upgraded to a much more heavy duty version.  The casting for the transmission/diff housing and lift arm housing was changed to include the mounting bosses and holes for all the brackets needed for the 3 point/top link or heavier SC hitch.  The SC bell housing mounted differently as well.  The traction booster linkages were completely different to work with the new right fender mounted valves.

Snap coupler hitch lift arms were heavier.  Two external hydraulic cylinders were used for the lift arms on both style hitches instead of a single internal cylinder.   The PTO shield was changed to mount with 3 bolts around the rear PTO bearing carrier instead of 2 bolts on the rear of the lift arm casting.  

I also believe the silver box around "Allis-Chalmers" was removed from the long hood decals.   The tach face also changed from more white face to black face.  I'm sure I'm missing other things but this is what I can go on from memory.  Mike

Have a series 4 average sheet metal, (grill beat up worse then anything), 3pt runs good, 25% tires, WF, Nice user. power steering quit, have all parts to fix. 3500.00 Gary IN

Thanks, Mike.   That explains alot.  I found a nice series 4 gas narrow front, the price is right.  I know mom's gonna tell me to thin the herd somewhere else and she is right, but a series 4 D17 vs. a WD, that's a no brainer.  The WD will have to go, or the B, but I have a soft heart for my little B.
