When I put the clutch and pp on and bolt it down, it seems to draw the fingers in to far. There doesnt seem to be enough stroke left to disengage the clutch. The flywheel was machined to 1.437 depth. I have a pressure plate, with the 4 button disc that has good spring pressure when you stand on it, but the fingers are at different heigts. Can I adjust the height of the fingers to make them all level. The clutch that came out of it was working fine but when you stand on the fingers it has a lot less pressure than the other one. The disc that came out of the tractor is organic and needs to be replaced. Are the 4 button clutch disc's any better than the organic ones. A lot of ?, but the last one I did was a D17D and it didn't hardly have any clutch, with the rod adjusted all the way out.

Most pressure plates are adjustable. The fingers should have an adjustment bolt on each one with a jumb nut. My old tech manual shows how to adjust this but you can do it by just tightning each bolt say a round at the time untill you get the proper clearance on the rod. Each finger must be the same height so the throwout bearing hits the pressure at the same time. It's likely the new disc is thicker than the old one which will draw the fingers in at a lower height when you tightened the pressure plate down onto the flywheel. The new machining could have changed it also.

Dave; Both pp's and dics are used. The organic disc is .330 thick, it is useable, the 4 button clutch is .380 thick and it pulls the fingers down farther, but this is a loader tractor and don't want to change it again. Maybe I will just bite the bullett and buy a new clutch.

I can't comment on what clutch disc is the "best". I did overhaul and replace the clutch in my brother's IH all terain forklift. Older model with mechanical shuttle. What they gave me was a ceramic 4 button severe duty rated disc. I got along well with it with lots of clutching.
Still, your PP should have the adjustable fingers on it and I think it's recomended to adjust this every time you replace the clutch so the wear can be taken up with the rod adjustment. I'll look again later tonight in my old mauals for the adjustment measurements.

Is it a series 4???????????? They have different fingers than all the others and with a button clutch you are supposed to use a new throwout brg shifter from a 170, which is longer and will reach the finger bolts better. Any older D17 you can adjust the finger height easily and if you're clever, even after it's rolled back together with proper homemade tooling.

 our experince  is not to use a button clutch on a loader    buttons will wear a groove in flywheel  that is why we use the woven style

Send your clutch and pressure plate to Rick Corder, he will take care of it. When your fingers lay down too far,one of two things or both are going on(if flywheel is correct). Your clutch disc is too thick,or pressure plate (cast part) is too thick. When bolted to flywheel either will cause low finger height.Adjusting to correct height will only worsen problem when this condition exists.HTH Tracy Martin

I rebuilt the motor in my series 4 this past summer. While inspecting the clutch I noticed that someone had used lock washers to between the pressure plate and clutch to adjust the fingers. The clutch looked good. I put everything back the same way it came out. I have used to tractor to pull a cut away disk and 4 bottom plow & never had any problems with the clutch. It has the button style clutch disk.

It is an early D17. Will take some pics and post them. The fingers are adjustable. The flywheel was ground to the right specs. I think i will adjust the fingers on the pp and put some locktite on the nut and go from there. Still undecided which clucth disc to use, as Norm said the button disc has a grove wore in it from the pp.

If it's a loader, spend the couple of buck and put new disc and PP in.  I rebuilt a tactor for a customer that only wanted the friction disc replaced.  So I did it, and set the PP to spec height.  Worked great for about 10 clutchings.  The you couldn't disengage the clutch anymore.  Pulled it back apart, and the fingers were too low. I couldn't adjust them enough to get them in spec.  I surmised that the fingers must have bent.  New parts and it was good to go.

there is a service bulletin on this, Flywheel must be machined.  If you need help post again and can give flywheel spec.

does the flywheel need to be machined on series one diesels, I am asking because I plan to replace mi while the engine is out
