Hey all, I was just wondering if anyone had a listing of all the Allis Chalmers dealerships of the past. The reason I'm asking is I was wondering where they concentrated on.
Thanks in advance.

I was wondering that myself. On trips around the west I'll see a bunch of old AC's in an area but there are no dealers of any kind for miles. I'm guessing there were lots of little gas stations / equipment dealers in small towns. Now even the gas stations are gone. I can't imagine someone driving very far to buy a tractor or piece of machinery. They probably bought whatever was local.

I've read a few times Mo. had the most AC dealers, Ohio must have been represented quite well too. Would be interesting to know for sure.

John, your thoughts were certainly the situation in central KS; IHC and JD had the larger dealerships, and the most dealerships. Herb

This is what I remember from eastern NC when I was a boy. There were dealers in New Bern, Newport, Kinston, Greenville, Williamston and Goldsboro. That covers roughly a 50 to 60 mile radius from our farm. The closest ones to us were New Bern, 16 miles, Greenville 30 miles and Kinston 25 miles. I know there were others further out but can't tell you now where they were.

From what I observed around here, AC's strategy was to have a small dealer in the commerce center of every farming community instead of a few big dealers a long ways apart.

I think there were a lot of them in MI, PA, and OH. It seems that all the large, heavy, hard to ship stuff I want is in one of those states. Sort of a cruel twist on Murphy's Law, I think. I am in Iowa-just to clarify things a little.

I may have a list from the 60's if I could find it. In 1983 there were
68 in Kan, 60 in Mo, 42 in Neb and 28 in OK but this was after they started going down.
When Deutz took over they really started closing them. Driving thru the country I can remember the days when you could find an AC dealer every 25-30 miles.

Bob Vanderploeg used to run Meridian Equipment in Bellingham WA. which was a Allis Chalmers Dealer which started as Meridian Tractor in 1940. Bob owned in from 1974 to 84 and then dropped it and the Kubota line and it went up the road to Lynden WA. to Scholtens Equipment which is to this day a Hesston Agco dealer along with Claus and Kubota still. There was a dealer in Skagit County and Stanwood Wa. that I know of and also one in Easten WA. in Waterville Wa. between Wenatchee and Coulee City.

I doubt that there is a complete list of dealers anywhere. But how about some tech savy person (that leaves me out) compiling info that many of us could supply from memory or our own lists. We could keep this post current and keep asking for Forum people to contribute. That might give us the best info available across the US. Just my $.02 worth.

The AC dealer in Carlinville, IL, back in the 50s and at least part of the 60s was Bates Motors. They also sold cars and trucks and are still around but don't sell ag equipment anymore.
Interesting to see the brochure of Wisconsin dealers that Byron posted. The dealers in Slinger and Mayville are still there. Would be nice if there was still a dealer in Grafton.

H.R. Low

I drove down to Orangeville and as far as I could see, it looked like there was still a building off the Main drag that could have been the dealership.

I know for a fact that there was one in Blue Ball, PA (Can't remember the name but I have a picture of a local tractor with their dealer stencil on the hood around here somewhere, something tells me it was Martins?)
Grumellis in Quarryville, PA which is still in business
Also heard there was one in Washington Boro (I think, one of the river towns along the susquehanna if I remember correctly), PA, never really got a chance to follow up that lead, lost the contact information of the person who told me that.
If anyone knows ANYTHING about ANY Lancaster County, PA dealerships, please please PLEASE let me know. I have some project ideas I would like to do, but need some info on some dealers first.

Down south there was Russell-Daniel equipment. Listed as Athens GA, but I think it was actually in Madison county. My grandfather's C came from there.
Savannah Valley gas co. had the AC dealership in Elberton, GA. One of the gentlemen that used to sell and service AC equipment still works there. It's Drake gas co. now.
There is Oakway Tractor in Oakway SC. They still sell parts.

If SamT stops by(haven't seen him in a while), he would know most of them down here in Northeast to middle GA. He was an AC field tech. I think that's what he told me. Said he had been to Savannah valley gas to work on a few units.

Hi all,
Not exactly sure this is what you're looking for, or if I'm right, but here it is anyway.
Bar H Ranch (or impliment now) in Stone Lake WI carries AC stuff. They have for a while, at least back to the 60's. And they still do today. Not sure what there history is, if they started as a AC dealer or anything, that is why I hesitated posting this. I may be puting my foot in my mouth.
But I know Unk', (my great uncle) got both of his AC's there. Both D15 II's, one brand new (no longer in the family), the other used which we still have, with the rear reflector on the toolbox which has the Bar H Ranch on it.
Don't know if this helps any, but I hadn't seen this one listed yet, and know they have helped us with parts in the past, and we'd recomend them if you're looking for something.

As already mentioned was Banderet Equipment in Commerce City, Co also in Colorado was Kats Imp in Longmont, which later became S&S Equipment in Longmont and Johnstown. The Longmont store became a Mozda dealer and is now an animal hospital. For a few years in the 80's there was a new AC dealer near Greeley but it only lasted a few years. Luther Equipment took on Allis/AGCO after he lost the Case dealership. Barneys Garage in Trinidad, Co was AC and perhaps still sells AGCO parts but was a NH dealer last time I was there. I know there were a lot of AC dealers on both sides of the mountains in Colorado but I don't know the names or locations. Will have to ask the "old timers"- someone older then my 61 years.

In Tn.
Waler May - Memphis, Ripley Tractor, Ripley, Lake County Tractor- Tiptonville, Boliver Tractor - Boliver, Mayers Equip - Summerville, Sharon Tractor - Sharon , Tri County -Milan, Austin Equip -Milligeville, MAury City, Dyersburg, Brownsville , B&G Equip Paris (still active) Goad Impl - Springfield , Perry Bros - Lawernceburg, Eskew Impl =_ Lebonnon, Reynolds Equip - Manchester. (all I can remember)
From 1970-1980 West Tennessee tied with about ten other territories with the highest market share of Gleaner Combines at 39% and tractors at 29%
What happened? Mega Dealer Austin sold all the machinery and the surrounding dealers the service and parts. When Austins stores went out so did the sales then the rest went out one by one.

Randy The answer to your question about 2 AC dealers in Goodland, I worked summers for the dealer up town while I was in school. His name was Ray Lefert and was a basterd to work for. You could not please him! Ken Hotler took the dealership out to west 24 on the edge of goodland. He sold the buisness to sigmans and that was the end of 50 years of AC Don

Some of the AC dealerships in Maine that come to mind:
Hammond Equipment in Auburn (left AC in the 80's but stayed in business, just bought out by a JD dealership by the same name). I bought my first AC from them, a 1941 B, about 1982.
Littlefield's Garage - Corinna. I'm told the business burned and closed. Now an auto parts salvage yard.
Dorr's in Bangor. Had AGCO until a couple of years ago. Still in business with Kubota.
Olin MacLauchlan in Ripley. I own the '44 WC that he bought new before becoming a dealer.
I'll do some research and post more.

My Mother's Uncle and her Dad(my granddad) found out if they bought 2 WC's they could get a dealership and $200 in parts. This was in the 30's at Bono, Arkansas, little town on US 63 in Northeast Arkansas. It was called Craft Implement Co. My granddad sold out to his brother fairly early. My great uncle and his two sons ran it until 1954 when my Dad, Joe Tolbert, traded 160 acres and some cash for the dealership. He changed the name to Bono Implement Co. He owned and operated it until he came down with parkinson in 1963. He was in his late 30's when stricken.
He sold it to Les Coffman and Marion Gulley. They changed the name to C & G Equipment. Gulley sold out to Coffman and he stayed in business until 1985 and folded. As a kid growing up I got to go to Memphis, about 80 miles away, with whomever in a pickup to get parts. It seemed like a huge building full of AC parts and pickups from dealers all over backed in the loading docks picking up parts. The building is still there and it is amazing(sp) how small it really is.
There were dealerships in Walnut Ridge, Corning, Dixie, Turmann, Bay, Lake City, Tuckerman, Bono, and Waldenburg Arkansas that comes to mind. I can remember my Dad telling me at one time he had over a hundred bank notes for WD's and WD-45's that he had co-signed with farmers. Banks wouldn't loan the farmers the money without a co-signer. The 50's was the golden age for AC's around Bono, Arkansas.
On a light note my Dad sponsored a race car in the 50's. It was what is known today as a sprint car. They ran at West Memphis, Riverside Speedway. The car was a steelboded A model body with a homemade chassis. It was painted Allis colors, orange and black, and numbered WD-45. They ran a six cyclinder chevy powerplant. Often they were asked how do you get a "tractor" motor to run and sound like that. LOL

I've been waiting to respond with names in hopes that my memory would improve but it's not happening so I'll post what I know and try to update the rest later.
In eastern North Carolina:
Newport NC, Simmons tractor. Last time I went by there they were still in business as a Simplicity dealer and were still working on some AC's and Gleaners but the owner is getting on up in years.
Greenville NC, Hendrix-Barnhill. Closed down about the same time AC did.
Williamston NC, Mark Chesson and Sons. Still in business as a New Holland dealer.
Very knowlegeable on all things AC and still working on some Orange stuff last time I was by there.

There was also a dealer in Stillwater and one in Norman but pop couldnt remember their names.
My father is going to get a list together of the old dealerships that he can remember.
We still have 2 or 3 wooden crate pallets full of NOS parts from the 60s-80s that we are going to start going through. I found a nearly new 190 bar grille grille in the rafters the other day, dad said they removed it from a tractor that was only a year or 2 old when the back half burnt from a baler bearing going out and catching the hay on fire.

Cordell's in Clay City, Indiana is where my Dad did all of his business in the 40's through 60's. Pigg Implement (Barney Pigg) bought them out by the early 70's and Dad went to them in Sullivan, Indiana. Randy Pigg now runs it and it is almost all New Holland and some Beuhler. He still stocks a large supply if AC and Gleaner parts.
In the late 50's and early 60's there was at one time an AC, and IH and John Deere and Oliver dealer all in Clay City within 5 blocks of each other . This was a small town with a high school of abot 220. Farmers got bigger real fast and so did dealers. High school is still about the same size maybe 280.

Dad was a dealer in Blanchester Ohio in the 60's and 70's. He sold Allis and New Holland and other short lines. The name of his business began as Ledford Implement Store and Later became Ledford Equipment Co. Before he was the owner it was Wheeler Implement, and before that it was Bash Implement. Bash also had a store in Wilmington OH in the 40's or 50's. Ray Townsend had an AC dealership just south of Wilmington OH for a time in the late 50's, early 60's. That's where Grandpa's D-14, One-Ninety gas and E Gleaner came from. Jim Atley had an Allis dealership east of Wilmington for a number of years in the 60's and 70's, maybe as far back as the 50's.

Back in 2004 when we had the GOTO in Canandaigua New York, I posted an un-official listing of Allis dealers in New York state. I started with 85 dealers listed before the show. When the show ended we had a total of 105 dealers that were listed. We asked people to list a dealer if they did not see it on our listing. I'm sure there were more but we thought that was pretty good for New York state. A retired Allis dealer by the name of Robert C. Raycraft from Capake Falls NY contributed most of the names.
