I am replacing the engine in my 1959 D 17 with a 226 gas from a 170 AC, the problem is the points/ timing assembly is I think the same but the dowl pin doesnt line up on the 170 block with the assembly from the d 17 engine. I am just taking the parts off the d 17 226 and puting them on to the 170 226 . what should I do. Can I use just tap out the dowl pin and bolt it on or will that do damage to the timing gear, or do I need a different timing points assembly . If anyone would have some knowlede on this please let me know thanks.

It is maybe more commonly known as the governor assembly, the points are mounted on to it hope this helps. thanks

Why don't you want to use the governor assy that's on the 170?
