Hi guys-Just picked up an early 60's TL-12.

Who out there has worked on one that I can pick their brain every once in a while?

Thanks
Terry

Thanks
Terry

I'm surprised at the lack of response on the TL 12. I haven't owned or repaired one but I could give a few specs ....... What in particular do you need for it (maybe the list is too long...LOL)?

Eric-Mine is a Series II I believe as it has 4 headlights, D17 engine, etc.  Serial number is in the 3000 range.  Do you have a book stating what year this would be?

Cal-How does the lever by a person's left leg work?  When you apply that does it act as a method to knock the transmission out of gear and keep it from moving?

Do you know where a parts machine might be?  Right now I am looking for a least (2) headlight steel housings and (4) rubber housings?  (see middle picture)

Terry: My serial # book doesn't go back quite far enough to include yours......should be somewhere up to 1964. The parts for the lights you may be able to get through an industrial/automotive/truck supply store. From the picture the parts look quite familiar to current lights available such as Grote brand etc. I believe the lights are exactly the same on all the TL models so if you find anyone of the models for wrecking they should match.
My literature talks about a lever on the operator's right side that when applied the tranny cuts out immediately when you touch the brake pedal and works again when you take your foot off the pedal.
For its age it looks to be in good shape on that picture.
Eric

Could the rubber be the same as used on JD tractors on the fender lights??

The original parts have "Hobbs" in the rubber molding.  Hobbs was sold to Stewart-Warner and then Honeywell.  Honeywell sold them and the new company in the Carolina isn't returning my messages.  Maybe Grote has something similar...

Here is a JD light housing I picked up off of ebay but my JD buddies can't tell me what it is off of (this is a Hobbs part too).

I'll  have to check the other JD lights you mention...are they the ones that mount on the SoundGard cab fenders?

Thanks
Terry

Look at the guys at General Gear http://www.tractorparts.com/
I've found them quite helpful in old machinery parts they may know where to get you those...

I've got the previous generation TL12, don't know what all is the same or different but if you have any questions I can try to help. Have fun with that it's a great machine, Allis really made some underrated loaders...

I have a modified TL-12. SN#50 I also still have a TL-20D I'm scrapping.

I've owned my TL-12 since 1979. It's seen a lot of work. The original engine broke a crank in 1980 and the torque converter was damaged because someone didn't install the thrust bearings in the engine. I changed it to a 240 Ford with a C-4 transmission. I installed a new 30 gpm  pump. I fitted a self contained power steering pump from a large truck. The 240 engines were too high a compression for full throttle while digging and beat them selves up with detonation so I built a low compression 300.I was working with the engine when they all seemed to have vacuum only advance so built a distributor with centrifugal advance. After fighting with electric cooling fans for several years I switched to driving the engine cooling fan and power steering pump with a line shaft. The original cone clutches could not handle the power from the 300. They had to be adjusted so tight that it required too much effort to shift fwd/reverse. So I eventually deleted the cone clutches and use the auto transmission for fwd/reverse. The spline shaft inside the cone clutches is the same as a tractor PTO so I only needed to make as steel disk with the clutch mounting bolt pattern and weld a PTO shaft adapter inside the disk and bolt in place to lock the clutch shaft to the drive gear. I built a selector for the auto transmission shifter that allows choosing gear stops for rapid shifts into preset fwd gear ranges. The Ford engine and transmission with front mounted hydraulic pump are so long that I had to make extensions to mount the counter weight.
Had an employee really reef on the steering wheel and broke the ball nut gear on the steering shaft about 1985. Bought a new one.  I rebuilt the lift cylinders with new tubes and shafts back around 1990. I've repaired the steering knuckles and relined the brakes. It needs the wheel cylinders bored and sleeved or replaced. I'd like to add a hydrovac for more braking power.

I had to buy a replacement differential assy some 25/28 years ago. Conroe Tractor in Conroe Texas is where we got an absolutely great differential assy. From what little wear I saw on the differential, I wished I owned the rest of the machine.
