building an open rpm 426 hot farm. wondering about a damper and what is better fluid or rubber and why. thanks

Fluid works better than rubber and is also safer. Typical rubber balancers are made of cast iron. Fluid made with a steel caseing and will survive higher RPM. Also rubber dampers have a tendancy to seperate over time.

Any damper is better than no damper. If you're going to run 3000 RPM than I probably wouldn't spend the money on a fluid damper or the work to customize the crank nose or make some kind of mounting hub to put it on. Maybe someone's got a simple solution and knows of a fluid damper that fits without much work, I'm just not familular with the 426.

Crank pulley and fluid dampner from any 7080-7580-8070-4W220-N5-N6-R5-R6 all bolt right onto any 426 crank nose..

426 fluid damper (from 7080-7580-8070-4W220-N5-N6) works well on a 301. I think Kenny's pulling parts may make the hub to mount it to. I've seen a model F- combine cast iron pulley machined to accept the 426 fluid damper.

You should also use a little longer Gr8 NF bolt, as the crankshaft nose will accommodate that and Loctite the bolt too. I'm thinking the bolt torque I raised to 220-250 ft lbs instead of what spec was.

does a fluid damper wear out? So you can adapted the 426 on 301, its not the same tapper right?

The dampener bolts to a HUB. The hub is tapered to fit the nose of the crankshaft. 301 and 426 crank noses are a different size.

Yes, they wear out. They can leak out the fluid and render them useless. They can also have the fluid solidify over thousands of hrs of use and render them useless too. Any dent to the dampener also makes them no good. I would never buy a used one and expect it to be good.

I have a fluid one made for a dt466 on my 301. It's mounted in kind of a weird way. I machined the front off of a 301 combine pulley and drilled and tapped it to accept the 466 fluid dampener.
