Well i know alot of people prefer to ditch the smaller rims that cam factory and go with 38 in with, lets say a 14.9 or 15.5 tire. Fro m this i here allis' tend to do very well. But i remember growing up in the 80's and early 90's seeing people run a shorter and fatter tire, well around here anyways. So i guess my questoin is, i run (depending what track im on) either a 16.9-28 or 14.9. I found a set of 18.4-26 that i would like to purchase cuz of the good deal i can get on them and wondering if these would be any good for the 4 mph 20% over rpm class i want to get into? As for now i have my wd45 set up for a 3.5 mph 10% over class with 16.9-28!

Seems everyone restricts width, on a good track a narrow tall tire will apply more traction than a wide tire. You get a long foot print with 38" tires. I have looked at lots of tires, I want to move up, but to gain the footprint nothing short of 38" will help much. I am running 16.9x26 on a WD and they work perfect in the 4 mph. The tractor runs 3.8 to 3.9 wide open, you never have to wory about the horn. With the 18.4, it could be done with practice.

FYI, a 16.9X28 Firestone bias tire is 56" in diameter. A 18.4X26 Firestone bias tire is

57.4 " in diameter. Your ground speed with either tire is essentialy the same. Your flat plate dimension will rise from 209 sq. in. to 242 sq. in. To gain that footprint with a 38" tire you would have to step up to a 16.9X39 with 252sq. in. and a 66.3 in . diameter.

Even a 14.9X38 is 64" tall with only 200sq. in . of footprint.

I ran 16.9X26 Firestone 151 on the D17, old, hard and sharp . 38's would have gained me nothing. My .02

Well it depends on the rules. For instance some rules say nothing bigger than a 15.5 up to 5500 lbs. So in that case a 16.9 or 18.4 26 is a hinderence . When you have 16.9 or 18.4 26 in the same classes as 16.9 38 or18.4 38 s the winners 38s plus i never seen a rule against widening the rims to reduce height.

all good advice, but what im looking for out of the shorter tire is to keep my rpm up higher in the 4 mph 20% over rpm class where as with 38s i would have to lower my rpm to compensate for the 4mph rule! Also with the 18.4 26 i figured with the width i have more tire on the ground instead of running the 16.9 28s which would have less. thats what im thinking but if im wrong please correct me

I've always why no one runs the 30 or 32 inch tires should be cheap to buy used ones and I know caseih and a few others use 8 bolt centers I've been wanting to go to a salvage yard myself some day
