What is the difference between a series I and series IV?  I know the housing appears to be stronger, but is the pinion shaft and gears stronger?  Is series III and IV the same?  Can you interchange series I for series IV without changing side gears in the differential?  Thanks!

WD-WD45-old D17's are 15 tooth bull pinion shaft driving an 82 tooth bull gear for 5.47 to 1 ratio. Effective with D17 series 3 (band and disc brakes) they are a 14 tooth bull pinion shaft driving a 76 tooth bull gear for 5.43 to 1 ratio. The newer design has thicker stronger teeth for more strength (less breakage). The gear ratios are essentially identical at 5.47 to 1 versus 5.43 to 1 for about a 2% difference. The newer bull pinion shaft is fine splines into the diff side gears instead of the old course splines.
