If I wanted to do a 12 volt conversion on a WD and just change the ignition coil to a 12 volt coil do I use a resistor coil or non resistor coil?  Thanks

You can use either, but with 12volt coils so readily available why? unless you want it to look original, but then you wouldn't be doing the conversion.

I suppose I should further explain what I was saying....

Do you have an external ballast resistor now?  If not, you will want an internal resistor coil, if you do, then you will want to remove it or buy an external resistor coil.

My question is, why change?  Six volts works well when you keep things clean, and use thr proper cables for six volts.  Which are OO for power, and the strap for ground.

I changed mine over to 12 volts, and put a delco alternator on. Used the old wireing harness and the old cables  now I have four halogen lights forward and one rear, and I can hook up to 12 volt controls and not be hinderd by the old 6 volt system. Was a win win for me.

If you use one of the 'newer' CS-130 series alternators, they are a smaller diameter, fitting and looking 'better'.As well tons of power available if you add an electric winch or two !
Going 12 volts also allows you to jump start the neighbour's 'greenthing' when asked !!

All you need to have is the ambition. Step by step instructions walk you right though the system back to front. We also offer a nice replacement 6V system. Why would any one NOT want to go 12V?  MACK

Steve will set you up with a first class set up !! most of the tractors I have owned I have switched to 12 volt useing a delco look alike alternator, the way I look at it is if the next owner wants to go back original they can do it with minor work and in the mean time I have a modern system that will  "crank em up"  One thing that bugs me is when people install an alternator useing the gen bracket and take a sawzall an cut the rounded trim piece of the grill off instead of makeing a taller bracket -- That changes the originall return option  IMO.

If they use our frame rail Alternator bracket kit, they won't have to do dat'. Its just a matter of adjusting the CNC machined support towers to raise the Alt above the shround. Actually, you can put the Alternator in service without the fan on it. Its not like the Alternator has a whole lot of work to do on a Tractor where it would overheat, but with our bracket kit, it isn't necessary to do so...

I used a universal 12 volt coil I bought Farm and Fleet. No resistor. Has been running great for years. Some people say a resistor is necessary, but I have been running without and no problems.

There are 12 volt coils and 12 volt coils. Some require an external resistor and should be labeled as such. Some don't need a resistor and probably are only labeled 12 volts. Running a coil that needs a resistor without one will fry it eventually, giving the characteristic of running 10 or 15 minutes then quitting and not starting until about that much delay to let the coil cool down again.

I have one of the alternator brackets from Steve and I like it a lot. The amount of adjustability is far more than I expected.

How much does your conversion kit cost

The complete kit for WD/WD45 with Alternator runs $475.+ shipping. If you take a visit to our website and look under "12 Volt Systems" you can see what the kit looks like, and what it comes with. We also offer our optional frame rail Alternator bracket it for those who do not want to be bothered with trying to fab a bracket. I designed it and it pretty much covers all the geometry needed to sit the Alternator in the right spot...
