I have a series 2 d17 and hope to go look at a wide front end for it. How do I know if it will fit the series 2 or is there any difference btween series. THX, Jim

I put some links to some pictures, Is your tractor a gas or diesel? they have different front ends. diesel has a longer rear mount since a diesel has a 6 cylinder motor vs a gas with a 4 cylinder motor

Here is a tractor with the front end the the series 1 and 2 uses, see slotted holes for adjusting front axle width.

Thx Matt, Mine is a gas and I remember the holes on Dad's Series 4 when I was a kid a long time ago. When we needed to change the width the first time I was 14 and Dad handed me the book and told me how wide he wanted it. It was our first wide front and I remember thinking I was hot $#!! after i did it LOL. Did not know about the slots on the 1 and 2. THX, again, Jim

There was only one change that occurred in the cast housing of the D17, effective Serial Number 38136, all others after that were the same. This is because the bolts holding the lower cast bearing support to the main cast housing went from 1/2" to 5/8"

So as long as your front end you are looking at has the same same bolts you will be fine. No difference in Gas vs. Diesel, or single, dual or wide front, just the serial number break.

Sorry Matt, didn't read all of your post before I posted. I am afraid I disagree with your comment about the front being different for gas vs. diesel. The difference from the Gas to Diesel engine length was absorbed in the length of the frame rails, and sheet metal over the engine, the cast front housing didn't change. I didn't mean to jump in here and sound like a bully. I just did a housing change on a 17, and did significant research in the parts book before purchasing another housing.

Now I really feel like an idiot, you are talking about the actual frame of the front end, and I am talking about the front housing. Both are important depending on which or both he is changing. So we are both right. My bad!! Sorry again.

At SN 38136 (late Series II) is when AC upgraded to the heavier wishbone WF w/o the width adjustment slots that Matt refers to. Most people refer to this WF as the Series III/IV WF but in reality it came in as a late Series II. Mike

If you get the early slotted hole axle assembly, there is no difference between the gas or diesel. The back support bracket just bolts together differently depending which tractor you put it on.

Now as far as the later style, I haven't been around enough III and IV tractors to tell you if there is a difference in length or not.
