The Saga of the Injection Pump for an Allis “Forty Five” Grader
We've been resurecting this grader to ranch useable, with considerable help from an Allis savy neighbour..
Engine is the ADS 516 with belt driven supercharger.
We started with an engine that had dropped a big end bearing and been left open.
Found an unused rebuilt short motor from a liquidation sale, including what looked like a rebuilt injection pump (new looking lock wires etc). Got 2 good cylinder heads and put it together. Rounded up our collection of 15 injectors and borrowed a neighbour's tester. Came home with 8 useable.
Plucked up courage, put 6 in and it started on the engine stand. Next morning most of the remaining fuel in our temporary tank was in the sump. Following a lot of asking before doing we found
the bottom o-ring for the hydraulic head on the pump was missing
the 3-legged clip for the bottom of the head was squashed
the distributor timing was out by one tooth.
the govenor linkage was sticking – took our diesel apprentice son most of a day to find the burr on the spill valve control shaft that was doing this
As of now it needs just a sniff of aerostart to get going – cold or hot. Runs fine once going, with a clean exhaust. Which would be fine for our use, but it should be better I'm told.
Now some more detail on what and maybe where to.
The pump on the original engine was
PSB6A 100EH 4080F4, rev range 600 - 1600rpm
#4347865 (which is according to the parts book)
The head is HD 4067AR (rebuilt)
Timing is 28 degrees
The injectors for this pump were wound well down and it will not work with injectors set at recommended pressure. Plus it has an extra bit of wire to hold some of the govenor linkage.
The pump we have on it is
PSB6A 90EH 4083E1 rev range to 1800rpm.
#4347866
Head HD 4??8AR (the plate is damaged). (Also rebuilt).
I have parts and service manuals for HD11 dozers which detail that Allis was chopping and changing plunger size (10 or 9mm) and timing (10mm 28 degrees, 9mm 32 degrees). This part number is listed in the HD11 parts book for engines before 10-4855. and was timed at 32 degrees.
It also seems that the one tooth out on the distributor might have been advancing the injection timing – but it also looks like the plunger was hydraulic locking until the distributor slot opened. Which doesn't sound healthy for the head IMO, but might have given a jolt to the injection..
So do I
Leave it as it is?
Think about 32 degrees (But what about the supercharging, as I've been told that 28 degrees is common with turbos)
Think about finding a good 10mm head and fit that?
Suggestions and information will be appreciated.
