I have completed the replacement of the torque tube and pto gear box. I am trying to hook up the drive shaft to the pto box. It will only go in half way. I have lubed it up several times. I have used a wood block & 4lb hammer to try and tap it in but no good. I am afraid to keep pounding on the shaft, I am worried about damaging the gear box.

Has anyone else had this problem?

Rod, might be good to say what model you are working with. Sounds like burrs in the pto where the bolt goes thru if it's a WD or 45. This would not be the case on other models. Den

File the burrs off the out put shaft and feel around the inside of the PTO shaft for burrs. Might need a rat tail file inside. Flapper wheel on a die grinder might get it.

Sorry, I should have said I was working on a WD45. I thought that I had asked enough stupid questions by now that most people remembered me as the dummy trying to play tractor mechanic with his very first tractor (WD45).

I thought the PTO shaft might need to be ground down a little because it looks like it might have be welded on and ground down before I bought it. I let my wife talk me into proving I am as dumb as she thinks I am and try to hammer it on one more time while she 'helps'. So now it is stuck half way on. I gave up on it for the night. I will try again tomorrow with heat and hope I don't burn my garage down. If I manage to get them apart, I will take the PTO housing off and take a grinder to the PTO shaft, remove the short shaft from under the 3 point hitch and get it to hook up on the work bench before I try to put them back on the tractor.

Thanks for your suggestions fellows. It helps a lot.

Leave the grinder where it is and get a file. Use the best light and your good eye to find where it was binding and file it off.
