Ok so its not really a issue now that I figured out how to to start it but its not quite right. The tractor is a 39 B. I recently rebuilt the engine and the she runs and idles great. The problem is when the engine is cold it can be tricky to start. She will always "pop" on the third pull but will seldom start . When the tractor fires (but doesn't start) the carb floods and I have to pull the throttle all the way back (too completely close the butterfly) and crank it 3 times. On the third crank she will "pop" again and then I move the throttle up to the first notch and it will then start on the first crank. After that it will hot start on the second (sometimes first) pull with no issues. I Have checked to float level, valve clearance and have also checked the air cleaner housing for restriction. All three checked out fine. Anyone have a thought on what the problem may be?

Also my initial start settings are no choke and the throttle set at the first notch.

My 170 will do this, (not on a crank thank heavens) but for a cold start I use 1/2 inch of choke, and it usually starts perfectly.   I was worried about flooding as it seemed to do that easily, but if I get the choke right, and adjust it fairly quickly for smooth running, things are good! Big smile
