I have a 37 WC that I just got running but I want to check the timing with a light while it is running. Where are the timing marks and how do I access them. I see a rectangular cover on the top of the bell housing with 2wing bolts - is this the timing cover? Appreciate any help, this is my first allis

I believe you are correct, the cover on the top of the bell housing is where you should look on an unstyled WC.  It is on the bottom on the styled ones since they have a starter mounting hole on the top.

The timing marks on the WD & WC are viewed thru the opening on the underside of the
bell housing.

After the initial mounting of the magneto connect the timing light #1 or #4 spark plug wire, start the engine and with it running at ½ throttle or above, turn the magneto on its slots until the timing light indicates the “fire” mark is in line with the indicator. Tighten the attaching hardware and recheck the position of the mark before disconnecting the timing light.
