Just looked at some pics agsain of old allises.  What is the purpose of the oval tips on the exhaust pipes that are straight and point out to the side of the tractor at about a 45 degree angle?

I'm guessing it's for some back pressure and a hint of noise reduction.  I've got one on my WC and it sounds sweet.  Also sounds good with the side muffler, but there is something about that pipe.
