does anyone know if the converter pulls out of transmission like a car or pickup does or if something in trans. has to come apart?

Yes.  My dad told me to tell you to pull it straight apart though as not to damage a fiber bushing in the middle.  They are extremely hard to come by.  We just had ours apart a year ago.  Good Luck!
