Hey guys, I have a problem with my 916h. First off,
I got a 916 from my wifes grandfathers estate last week. It had been sitting in
a barn for over 10 years and has had some parts removed over the years. muffler,
carb, driveshaft, lift pump...but it has an almost new mowing deck he ordered
for it, so that's a bonus!
Well, I thought i'd get online and find me
some parts to make her come alive again. I lucked up and found another 916
tractor on craigslist a couple hours away. The seller said he ran it in the
fall, but thought it needed a coil because there was no spark to the engine. i
snatched it up for 200. i figured parts alone would cost me that elsewhere if I
could even find them. Turns out his 916 was in alot better shape than mine so I
quickly decided to use it and use mine as the donor tractor. About 2 hours of
troubleshooting and finding a faulty safety, the mower starts great and the
engine seems strong.
Here is my problem, I got it fired up, took a seat,
went to go forward...nothing. It won't move. I then took apart the hydro release
to make sure the plungers weren't stuck, checked fluid levels, ect. and still
nothing. Also, before I got started, I couldn't get it to roll at all, one rear
wheel will go one way and the other will go the other way. but can't seem to
free up the rear end. The (drive pulley?) thats on the rear axle seems stuck. I
removed the pulley and carefully put a wrench on the stem and applied a little
pressure on it while my buddy rocked the mower back and forth and nothing. It
doesn't seem seized, just like there is something not releasing.
Like I
said, I have another 916, but REALLY don't want to swap rear ends if I don't
have to. I still don't know why I can't get the thing to roll after pressing
down on the hydro release buttons, or when they are in the up position. All the
seals are good and the ball plungers inside them are working great. I
primed/bled the hydro pump and I know its pumping. Makes me think it's not the
release, but something in the rear holding it. Sure could use some guidance,
it's alot different than my zero turns!!
Thanks, Scott

At the risk of insulting your intelligence, the brake isn't set or seized in some way is it? Also, go to www.simpletractors.com. It is the Simplicity/AC garden tractor counterpart to this site.

I have the pulley that the brake band attaches to removed. Would that take the brake out of the equation? I think the simplicity equivilant to my tractor is the 7116. Thanks

If the input transmision pulley won't turn then the hydro is siezed. This would also explain why iy won't roll.
------------- Yea, I can fix that.....

Is their any tricks to get it un-siezed? Does that mean hydro pump, or rear end? Sorry for my ignorance, i'm not use to working on hydros.

I wonder if it would be easier to just swap the
rear ends on the mowers, or swap the motors. I know the rear end and drive
pulley spin freely on the other 916, but i'm not sure if there will be hydro
problems with it. My other 916 is missing a carb, muffler, gas tank, driveshaft
and lift cylinder for the deck. It has the engine, but i'm not sure if it runs.
Has anyone done a rear end swap on one of these? Any advice?

A complete rear swap is not that hard. It's really what direction you want to tackle the problem. Swapping the rear end basicly is disconect the drive shaft at the bevel gear box and remove the 4 bolts and a couple of linkages. I know there are a few more items but it's fairly straight forward. Swapping the hydro section there are only a couple of main bolts that hold the hydro to the rear cast section of the transmision. Again there is a few linkages but you need to make sure the mounting area is very clean so the O-ring will seal or you'll certainly have an oil leak.
As far as fixing the current hydro, souds like moister collected in the unit and it rusted. Due to the clearances and continued contamination your wasting your time. Just swap out with the good unit.

Thanks for the info, looks like next weekend just got a little busier for me. I'll just swap it all over.

It amounts to a piston pump driving a piston motor , with a swash plate to control the flow. If the input shaft wont turn then the pump is locked up . With the wheels trying to turn in opposite direction then the differential is working but the wheel motor is not releasing the hyd fluid generated by the wheel motor. The button for moving the tractor relieves this pressure to allow pushing the tractor but sounds like a few more problems in the hydro section. Just swap the full unit and hope the other one is good .

As Dave metioned, its not a tough job at all to swap out the Hydro/Rearend unit. A few bolts, some linkages, and boom, boom done deal. When I restored my 716H a few years back, I remember it was quite an easy job...

Thanks for all the help. I finished it up this
evening and she is running strong. I haven't put the deck on yet, but plan on
tackling that wednesday.

Make sure your linkages are adjusted properly for correct Hydro operation and stick position. Took me a couple shots at adjusting, but eventually dialed it in. Have fun! They're a cool machine to work on. I'm going to be doing another 716H resto, this time for my nephew. Got a little bit of time to play late yesterday afternoon and just lifted the motor out of it. Doesn't take long to tear em' down, its putting them back together that takes the time...

Hi Steve-I realize this post is from 6 years ago... what was wondering if you could offer me some insight into the 716h. I have one and going down hills the hydrostatic surges terribly on it almost throwing me out of the seat. It is more pronounced in low propel speed mode. Is this a problem with the adjustment of the hydro?
Thanks in advance for the help. Terry
