Anyone have any opinion on the removal of cylinder ram from cylinder still mounted (tail end) on the crawler? I know I'll have to find a truck shop with a big enough tool to remove the packing nut on the ram shaft. I have no experience on these large cylinders and wonder if reassembly will be possible just with elbow grease power. Thanks.

I`ve not had to do any of those later cylinders Corey, only the old ones with brass gland, but was lookin at the later one today. You will need to make a wrench outa 1/2 or 5/8 plate in half moon with handle shape with lug on inner tip to lock snuggly into those castleated recesses cast into the top of the big head nut, by the look of it. Hydraulic shops probably have a wrench hangin on the wall, but a man of your capabilities could make one. I`m guessing that big head nut has to unscrew outa the cylinder

Well, I've already loosened the cylinder heads on them as I thought that would be the worst of it. I'm mainly wondering if I can get the rams with new packings back into the cylinder after I replace them. I guess I'll do it the way I do everything: just wing it. I've rebuilt some smaller cylinders before, like in a tommy lift or backhoe, but it's been a long time,. and I don't have the comfort of youthful ignorance to let me jump right in.

I did it once by making a ring compressor to get the packing back into the bore. The ring compressor that is used for motor pistons did not work. My compressor was 2 half cylinders bolted together and bored to size. Best wishes
