I'm fixing up an 80-r mower, found a plug on top of round body smells like there was gear oil in it. What type should I use, and is it supposed to be full? Thanks, keith so. va.

Somebody will probably answer before I get back to you. My manual is in the barn -- not certain that I remember, but think they originally called for 20wt.oil -- but will have to check that.

The manual says: Drive Housing: Capacity 1 Qt. SAE 20 or 30.
Do not let oil get below or do not fill above the driveshaft.
I got my mower long before I got a copy of the manual and
it had gear oil in it.  Hasn't used any, so it's still in there.
