I need to make some more shims for the pinion shaft cover on my B. Can you buy stock at the auto store or is there a cheeper/better way?

Hobby shops or hardware store with the K&S line can have an envelope of shim stock sheets, 4 x 5" maybe not big enough for a transmission case.

For the paper shims I like to draw them up in AutoCAD and print them full size, then cut them out like paper dolls while watching TV.  In a pinch, the paper ones can be used to replace the steel shims.

Brett, you work too hard. How about inking the end of a rod or rod cap on a stamp pad and then printing that on the shim stock as many times as needed, then cut out the shims. No need to measure and make a drawing. Or with thin shim stock just push it against the rod or cap and slightly wrap it over the edges and dimple the bolt hole. Could use gasket material or paper to get a pattern that way too. Cut it out and trace around it onto the shim stock.

Gerald:

For rod caps and other simple flat surfaces, you're right.  For other places like final drive pinion caps, steering quill housings, etc, it is still less work to draw them up (and good practice too).  Of course, if I was really trying to "work smarter, not harder", I should probably just put a spare steel shim on the copier and press go...

Brett,

I thought about the copier too. Still need the stock first. I have the originals so I will just trace around the originals.
