My Allis Chalmers C has a 6 volt generator on it with an 8 volt battery. There is a cut out mounted on top of the generator. The cutout will not close to allow the generator to charge the battery. When I hold the cutout closed, it produces 7.5 volts but the battery is 8 volts. I think what is happening is the cutout is set for a 6 volt battery and it senses that the battery voltage is above 6 volts so the cutout thinks the battery is fully charged. How do I set the cutout so it will charge an 8 volt battery? |

First of all, the cutout has nothing to do with regulation. A Voltage Regulator does that. Your C should be equipped with an 3 position headlight/charging switch which you control the amount of charge put into the Battery by pulling the charging switch out into it's other positions. All the cutout is designed to do is take the Battery out of the system when the engine is either at low idle or when the engine is shut off so the Generator doesn't act like a Dynamo and draw milivolts from the Battery as it sits. IF you don't have the OEM 3 positon switch we sell them exchange or outright. If the gennie still isn't putting out enough to top off the 8V Battery, (which it should) the third brush on the Generator can be adjusted slightly to accomodate the 8V Battery's digestion... A 6 volt generator will put out 12-15 volts if the battery is not connected. The battery helps regulate what the charge voltage is. You generator should charge a 6- 8 or 12 volt battery. If the generator only puts out 7.5 volts, that is probalby a generator problem. If you pull in the contacts manually and the generator only puts out 7.5 volts, then getting it to close automatically will not help. ------------- Like them all, but love the "B"s. |

You to run the generator faster or with a stronger field excitation to get more volts. It takes about 2.35 volts per cell to charge a lead acid battery, or 9.4 for an 8 volt battery. Or clean up the starter connections and go back to the proper 6 volt battery. Gerald J. |

For a quick test, ground the "F" terminal to the tractor frame. Start tractor and measure the voltage between the "G" and Ground. (take the wire off the G terminal which removes the battery wire and it should go way over 12 volts. ) ------------- Like them all, but love the "B"s. |
