My starter needed repair on my 8050 (approx. 4000+ hrs) it had the Japanese make - Densil? The repair shop said to go for a new Delco instead because they are cheaper/easier to repair and also would turn over the tractor faster. Anybody have experience or preference on Delco vs Desil starters? The older 7000 series did have delcos.....?

We have never replaced a starter motor on any of our bigger Allis tractors, they are all Delco.  Are you talking gear reduction, or direct drive?  I like the Delco gear reduction on my truck, although I have had to replace brushes and the brush holder, otherwise it has been good too, but a lot smaller engine to crank. The key to long starter life is keep the batteries in good shape, the connections clean and tight, and don't over crank the engine, heat is what really kills starters, and over cranking causes a lot of heat.

Actually, in my experience, the Denso is a good starter motor. I replace some Delco's with the Denso. No problems on my end with parts, and to me the Denso is tougher. More expensive for sure, but I don't know about faster. As for the performance of the unit, I think the Denso has a little more snot to it over the Delco. JMHO.

Denso (nippon = Japanese )  is a shunt wound starter.  It engages slow to prevent tooth damage then shifts to high speed.  Denso 's were a bit faster than Delco - thats the reason AC and others used them  - better speed, better starting.  This speed is dependant on good cables and connections.
