All I can say is whoever tackles a job like I just did should go out and buy 3 feet of clear tubing and 2 hose clamps before getting a 27 year dormant diesel to run. To make a long story short I reflushed the tank, tore apart every fuel connection, tore off the hand primer and fuel filter and started resealing at the nipples that the gascolaters thread into. By the time I got to the hand primer area I jumped the clear hose directly to the pump, primed air out with pressure from tank and listened to her run perfectly normal. WOW!!Then I installed filter and jumped clear hose from filter intake back to line coming into primer, and finally after reinstalling hand primer I used the clear hose from primer outlet to fuel filter. With the clear tubing I couldn't believe how many air bubbles came out initially after gascolater work! I ran it a lot with the clear tubing just to see when and if and where air was coming from. At last I removed the clear tubing and it's back to stock. If I have any more issues I will replace steel pipe with clear if possible. It still needs 2 whifs of either to start, but it runs well and drives superbly, I can't find anything amiss. I am not going to sell her today...Thanks a million to all who have helped me through all this fumbling around! I really mean it!! Dana

I've been reading and following along with the surging issue with great interest and I'm glad you got it fixed. One day I might get something this modern and need to remember these tips. Thanks for the posts. Tom

Seems like that tractor is giving you a bit of an education on diesels, Capn.!! Best way to learn is from experience.

I see your problem Dana, it has never been about fuel, the problem is that stack is tooo short! Nice work, glad you got her fixed up. I couldn't quite tell from your description, but I think you found the problem in the hand primer. Those things are a blessing and a curse, Many people plumb around them, they tend to leak like a sieve. Again glad you finally figured it out.

The problem causing the surging had to have been air. After pulling the drains and pipes from the tank to the primer and putting everything back together I pressurized tank and had that clear hose hooked to line that hooks to primer inlet. There was lots and lots of air and I kept pushing till it was clear fuel. After prooving everything was worthy of going back on I ended up with all the original lines back on, but it I have trouble again there will be clear tubing installed. When pumping primer vigorously some tiny bubbles get in there, but pumping it normally it works fine. Lil sucker really pumps well! Now she just needs to work this summer baling, and as I see it now she'll need rings and maybe more, but we shall see.

Give her some work with seafoam in the tank and crankcase before you consider tearing into the engine. I have had great luck with it. Had 2 engines smokey, one had been seized. Gave them some work with seafoam, and now, no more smoke, start better, run better etc. Glad you got it fixed, its a real nice looking tractor, especially for what youve got into it. Welldone, Trev.
