now that i've finally sold my motorcycle, i'm tractor shopping. there are 2 fords somewhat close, a 4110 and a 4630.

4110 is about $2k cheaper than the 4630, and also comes w/ a 6' brush mower. no weights, no canopy, and has turf tires on it....fine until next winter gets here. i know it's lower on power than the 4630, but i'm mowing fence rows and around the tighter areas that don't get baled, blading the drive, and working some ground for garden/food plots. atleast 1 set of remotes and the guy describing the tranny over the phone was a tad confusing to me....not sure if it's the 8x2, or 8x4 shuttle. working tach shows 800 hrs, but he's guessing it's rolled over....so 10,800hrs....sounds high if it's original, but it spent alot of years owned by a golf course....maybe the hours really are 800.

the 4630 was a highway dept. mowing tractor that's been repainted to regular ford colors....looks good in the pics. 8x2 tranny (too bad, i wanted the shuttle), canopy, ag tires (not alot left though), 1 set of remotes, 3900 hrs, and is the older non-turbo version.

i know both would be enough HP for me, but which one would be the better all around tractor? or, would it be worth the $2k diff for the 4630.

If the 4110 is as good looking as it seems, I think I'd go with it. A set of used rear tires with wheels if necessary should be a bit less then $2,000 so you would come out money ahead, IMHO.

if it is really 10,800 hrs.....is there any way to verify if the engine has ever been opened up, or if it's original? even if it starts, runs, and operates just fine, i don't think i want an original tractor with almost 11,000 hrs on it. and if it's the 8x4 synchromesh (not shuttle) tranny, is it worth a crap? and what exactly does that mean....shift on the go?

shift on the go is exactly what it sounds like. It's a catch phrase that was started when you could first change gears with the tractor rolling (anything but an absolute full stop). Try that with any of the tractors with out it and you'll just have a lot of grinding.

I don't think I'd take the risk on a high hour tractor like that unless you figure you can full overhaul the engine for the price I could pick it up for and still be better of then a lower hour tractor..

First step would be to look at both of them then decide if you suspect high hours I would look elswhere.

Nothing harder on a tractor than bush hogging IMHO, and both of these sound like that is what they spent their entire life doing. I suppose I'd go with the golf course one.

Stan, Why is bush hogging so hard on a tractor? Seems to me there are a lot of tractor chores that are harder on a tractor than bush hogging. By the way, what does IMHO mean?

I wouldn't buy a tractor owned by the highway dept. My dad works for the transportation dept here in KY. Though he is an engineer and has nothing to do with the mowing, he has told me that the guys who mow the right of ways are hard on the equipment and aren't concerned about taking care of it. Most have never sat on a tractor before in their lives. The tractors are normally serviced properly, however I feel that is offset by the unexperinced operators. The golf course tractor might be a better choice.

i have a 52hp,1355 (fiat) oliver ( cousin to the 5040 allis) from 1970 that has over 10000 hrs on the original motor and still use it reguraly with a 7' bushhog, never had a motor problem, or any main system issue, will put it against anybodys tractor that has not been maintained properly, with 4000 hrs on it.They are machines, if properly maintained i would not let the hours bother me, but i would pay accordingly

I think I saw them on craigslist the other day. Sounds like what you are describing. I thought they were from a sod farm or something like that in Spring Hill or there abouts.

I remember them being a pretty decent price for what they were.

The tree farm tractors were different. That 4630 needed engine work.....but it was also priced low at $4000. I was just sent some pics of the 4110 and it looks very original.....not as good as i was hoping, but still pretty decent. Now that I've seen better pics, I'm not sure it's THE ONE.....that just means I get to do more shopping, yah for me.....I think.
