I looked at a CA over the weekend, and the hand clutch appears to be welded together.
Is it a major job to replace/repair this?
The tractor needs brakes too -- how big of a job is that?

hand clutch isn't to bad. pull the final drive and beat, cuss and bleed depending on how rusted together it is.
Brakes are easy if it just needs new bands. If the drums are shot your pulling the final drives off.

Reed If your hand clutch has been welded together you may need to obtain another from a donor tractor. Rebuilding the clutch is not difficult at all, if you have a decent clutch to begin with, and the linings, springs, etc are available. You can replace the brake bands without removing the finals; just be sure your brake drums are still good 1st. You need to pull the finals to replace the clutch and brake drum on the non clutch side. The brake drum on the clutch side is integral with the clutch pack, it is keyed to the outer pinion shaft and may, or may not be easily removed from the shaft. The brake drum on the non clutch side is also keyed onto the outer pinion shaft and most likely will be difficult to remove. New brake drums for the non clutch side are readily available, the brake drum for the clutch side is VERY expensive (I have found it cheaper to have the machine shop turn down the drum, machine a tight fit cylinder to fit over the turned down drum, and spot weld it in place). I have a pdf file available on rebuilding the hand clutch should you decide to go that route.

Trying to get my ducks in a row before jumping in... This would probably be the first time for me!!

Reed Found these brake bands on eBay, the vendors here can probably beat the prices (and they are great folks to work with). Try advertising on the classifieds for a handclutch assembly to find out what they cost. If you don't think the hand clutch is going to be a usefull option in the CAs future you can swap it out fairly cheap with a straight axle like the one on the left side. You will need to find somebody who is parting out or parts out CAs for a straight axle. You will need a brake drum too.

I have the drum/parts available for the hand clutch assy. Can supply new linings for hand clutch with it.

Reed Have purchased the clutch friction material from Chris in the past; much better quality than what is available from AGCO (and the cost is comparable). The springs are available from AGCO. You may be able to salvage your clutch depending on how it was welded and if the ears holding it together are not broken.

Chris, do you have the right side drums for a ca? I'm just finishing up rebuilding mine and Greg is right, the clutch side drum is spendy. I didn't have any choice, the drum was shot, but I'm thinking about picking up another ca so it would be good to have another source for next time just in case. Thanks.

Reed - You asked about cost. My clutch was also welded together. I completely rebuilt my clutch - new linings, springs, balls, 3 new ball seats, bushing, resurface plates, resleeved brake drum and new brake linings. Did work myself - approx $400
