And what do you tow with it for weight?   For my tractor hauling, I started out with a Chevy 1500 with a 18' 12000 lb. trailer but the biggest I had ever hauled was a D17 with that setup.   I now have an 02 Ford F250 with the 7.3 powerstroke and am looking at upgrading my trailer to a gooseneck, mainly because my D19 doesn't fit on the current trailer that well.   Was wondering what you all have for towing rigs, and trailers and/or what you would recommend.   I don't want to go too big, but if I'm upgrading to a gooseneck, I would like to go a little longer and make sure it's a 8' wide deckover for wider tractors, etc.   I have found a couple used 12000 and 14000 lb. gooseneck trailers and would like to know if that's fine, or do I need to be going heavier.

I currently have an 04, F350, with a 6.3L Powerstroke dually, always use cetane booster and Ford oil filters.  The truck is licensed for 24K, so I ordered the trailer with two 7K axels.  With the weight of the truck and trailer I can only legally haul around 14K so I opted not to spend the money for the 10K axels and all that extra rubber.  I am considering upgrading to a small Freightliner with a small living quarters, gooseneck hitch and an enclosed gooseneck trailer.  Put RV tags on it and travel until D.O.T. finds a way to stop that.

I tow with a 97 F-Superduty (pre 450) 7.3 DIT with lots of  mechanical and computer grades, it is as much a toy as my tractors are.  It will easily pull, and stop anything that should be hauled on my 18' 14,000 GVW gooseneck trailer.

I started with a old body style dodge that had a cummins in it and a  24k lb gooseneck dual wheel tandem axle. Problem with the dodge it was three wheel drag, once you got off the blacktop you might need to unload the tractor and drag the truck to solid ground(actually been there and done that). Truck would pull great on solid ground, hauled a 8070 fwa with loaded tires one day no problems. Now i have the same trailer but pull it with a 2500 chevrolet 4x4 with a 6.0 gas engine and a 5 speed. Its a bit of a dog compared to the dodge but will go off road and is paid for. I believe if the combination truck and trailer is plated over 26K you by law should have a CDL license. The 14K trailer should be fine hauling most tractors below 100 HP i would think. A D-21 or something bigger would tax your tires pretty good especially on a hot summer day on a longer haul. The 7.3's are the most reliable powerstrokes out there, always thought the Fords had a nice comfortable interior. I personally really like the gooseneck over a bumper hitch they just seem to pull better and you dont have the stupid wheel wells to try and fit between.

We still go oldstyle around here. 1995 chevy 3500 pickup/ 6.5 diesel. 14000 lb. 18ft bumper. It will get you there, just not very fast loaded. Real good on fuel and not alot invested. A good farmtruck..

04 Super duty with V10 the trailer is custom built by local trailer manufacture 20 ft with a 4 ft beaver tail that can flip up to give me up to 24 ft of deck running 3 7K axles under it.  A trailer with triple singles with pull easier than tandem duals.  After having goosenecks I will never buy a bumper pull of any decent size.  I used to bum and barrow trailers then one day the wife said either you are going to order a trailer or I will do for you so I made the call and ordered what I got.  I made sure that when I ordered to make sure I did it right so it wil be a long term trailer.

Chuck, I pull with a 95 7.3 long bed crew 4x4. My gooseneck is a 16 flat/4 dovetail 101 wide. It has 2 7,000 lb axles de-rated to 10,000 by the company I got it from to stay under 26,000 total. My heaviest load is my UC @ about 6,800 lbs. Trailer weights 3,500 so I'm in trouble if I hit the scales. Pulls like a million bucks though!

I have my 1995 E350with a 7.3 but haven't towed anything with it yet. I need the hitch first. All I have for a trailer is a 7K car hauler but I did drag my OC46 home on that. No counter weights and no loader and I was still making my trailer strain with that load:(
When I find me a "new" trailer it will most likely have a pintle hitch and be at least 10K.

I pull with a 2002 Ford F250 regular cab 4x4 with a 7.3 liter diesel that has been amped up a bit with hardware and electronics.  My trailer is a 23' deckover (including 4' beaver tail) with two 7k axles, both with brakes.
After studying what I planned to haul, the weight of my truck, the truck's GCVW rating and the weight of the trailers, I bought my trailer with a ball hitch rather than a gooseneck.  It weighs in at 3,800 pounds.  I had to buy a much heavier receiver hitch that was rated for 15,000 pounds (factory unit was rated for 6,000 pounds).  Depending on the manufacturer, the gooseneck adds 500 to 1,000 pounds of weight to an otherwise equivalent trailer.

I see a lot of guys driving 3/4 and one ton trucks pulling gooseneck trailers with tandem axles and duals - probably 20,000 pound rated trailers.  While I'm sure they've got plenty of pulling power, the GCWR (weight of truck, trailer and all payload) is typically only 20,000 or 21,000 pounds for a 3/4 or one ton truck.  If you do the math, they have paid for a lot more trailer than they can legally pull.  That's fine until they load up the trailer that puts their GCWR over their truck's limit, and DOT pulls them over or they get into an accident.

If GCWR wasn't an issue, I would have bought a gooseneck in a heartbeat.

I recently purchased a 32 ft long by 8ft6in wide tarnel gooseneck with tandem duals/10 K axles. I can pull it with the pick-up, but most of the time it goes quite sweetly behind my 93 freightliner FLD 120. Darrel

04  Dodge Cummins with a PJ 22' bumper pull.  I originally bought the dually and bumper pull so I could use my Lance 8.5 camper and still pull a heavy trailer to shows....that only happened a couple of times, but I am satisfied with the setup. I agree that a gooseneck is normally overkill....and with a dually becomes a DOT magnet. Add tandem duals to the trailer and you have more weight in the truck and trailer than what you can haul...

1988 gmc 1 ton crewcab dually, 350 chevy TBI, spacer, ACCEL coil, cap, rotor, wires, engine oil cooler, shorty headers, straight pipe to the back, 4 speed crashbox, I'm legal for 20k total, I pull a gooseneck 24 deck over with 5 dovetail,3 7000 axles, pull my gleaner E no trouble at all. Havent hauled anything heavier, but I think a 190xt, a 200, or a 7000 would be no issue. I don't think I'd want to pull an L combine. I NEVER exceed 55 mph loaded, or not loaded usually, thats fast enough. Trev.

Biggest I have is a D14 at the moment.  Hope to have a D19 soon so I'll have to borrow my buddy's deckover to get it home since mine isn't wide enough.  I'd like a 14k gooseneck but the only place the d19 would ever go is my parents about 3 miles away so I'll just drive it :)

99 F250 4x4 V10 auto. The "no name" trailer I bought new more than 25 years ago, it's 18' and has two 3500 lb axles, one axle has brakes. I think it was rated at 8000 lbs. It's probably been overloaded most of it's life, I've replaced two sets of wheel bearings and that's about it for repairs.
I've pulled it with anything from an F150 to an F350. The heaviest tractor I've hauled is my D19d with loaded 18.4x34s, the back tires are set all the way in and they rub both railes. Now the heaviest load was probably my series IV D17 with the 500 loader and rear weights and a 6' Woods mower. The tailwheel barley fit on the deck while the loader bucket was curled under and still hung over the front. (Can you say young and stupid?) used to move it from farm to farm on back roads.
Today a D17 (no loader) is about the most it hauls. I repainted it last fall. We take it regularly for parts, equipment & tractors out of state (need to go get a WD in Indiana sometime soon). Speaking of young and foolish, the boys loaded the WD and the WD45 both on it and brought them home from the local show last fall, they said the trailer handled it fine. LOL

That said we're looking at 14,000 lb 20'+5' goosenecks to take over tractor hauling duties.

Hers: 2004 Chev. HD2500 crewcab with 8.1L gas and Allison transmission and 4x4, the thing is a pulling beast.

Mine: 1997 GMC 3500 Dually crewcab with 7.4L gas and automatic transmission, it pulls good but not as good as the 8.1L and is a gas hog when towing.

Trailers: Corn Pro 20+5 deckover concertible and a Corn Pro 21+6 deckover tilt deck both rated at 14K and both are great trailers but each has limitations that the other addresses. Also a 16' Pace enclosed for the small loads that need protection from the weather.

When I get really serious about towing I go to the 1993 Freightliner FLD112, 3176 CAT and Eaton 10 speed. I don't get there in a hurry, but I can pull anything that I can hitch to it. It also gets better mileage than my Dually and close to what the HD2500 gets. That's a 35 foot Matlock trailer with living quarters, everything you need to camp out at tractor shows including a bath tub! GCVW 48,000#

This is the setup I use for most local and smaller tractors.
2006 F350 6.0 dsl.
I am also planning to use this setup more frequently for heavy loads. I have an electric brake controller set up and the correct electric hookup wired, as well as the 7 pin used for the grain trailer. The original 7 pin has the brake lights and turn lights separate, which complicates direct adaptation to combination brake/turn lights on most trailers.
1993 Mack CH613. The trailer is a 27+5 w/20K axles. Buying a trailer is a pretty big investment for most of us, but I haven't regretted owning one. It seems like I use it frequently.

This isn't the answer you were hoping for, but it was already converted when I got the tractor. I can try to take some photos for you to look at if it would help you. I had a puzzle finding a hose to fit on front for the bypass on the water pump. The partsman finally found a hose from a Toyota that would fit my needs. The previous owner of this tractor did a lot of repair work with a welder, so duplicating it might be challenging.

Here are some topless photos that might help.

This trailer is sold and I now have a 20' dovetail. Can't haul 2 tractors to shows now.

That truck should be fine.

The 18' I have access to, has 7000 pound axles, for 14000 total capacity.  The trailer weighed 2400, that leaves 11600 load capacity.  That should be doable but I would definately make sure it has the correct load range tires.

It depends on what the trailer weighs, what the truck weighs, what the GCWR is for the truck and the trailer it is pulling.

This is my Dad's 1949. F8.  It's still powered by the original Lincoln V8, only a little stronger now with a few mods and an added 1/2" stroke. It also has air brakes with a 5x2 tranny. That's his "51" WD, and his Mercury V8 powered 9N on back.

99" F350  7.3 diesel.  basically a stock truck. AFE filter, 4 inch straight pipe, TS performance chip for tow and economy.  I borrowed the trailer to haul my 190XT, and 4 btm plow home.  Travelong 30 ft with 10,000 lb axles.  had already unloaded 190 when i took the pic.  was the heaviest ive ever pulled.   the Flint hills and west wind on Sunday sure made her work.

Eddie,
I LOVE your Dad's old Ford F8 set up!!! That is just awesome!

I tow with a 14 ft car hauler on my 92 Ford F150 302 cu in fuel injected with automatic over drive transmission with a cooler. When ever I tow my WD tractor or Coop Tractor, I take the auto transmission out of over drive.

I just took this picture earlier today. The truck is my 2001 Ram 2500 with the 5.9 Cummins diesel. Has a new Goerend trans and triple disc converter. Performance mods are coming next. The trailer is a 25' Gatormade and it is hauling my 1959 D-14 to our other place to do some plowing. I still have the side panels off because I had to have the starter rebuilt and never got around to putting them back on.

My rig is a 97 F-250 HD 4x4 with a 12 valve 5.9L Cummins. Also I swapped in a set of 2002 F-350 axles with 3.73 gears to get away from the Ford TTB set up. My buddy and I did the swap. It was a little tricky. My trailer of choice is a 28' CM gooseneck with 2 7k# axles. The heaviest load I have pulled with it was a 4020 JD with a 8' Bush Hog disk mower on the tractor and a IH 140 with a New Holland 256 hay rake. That was a 20 mile trip on a 2 lane state highway.(Thankfully no DOT's around. I was a little heavy)

I bought a 2007 Chev. 2500 6L gas ext cab with 8' box last year. I still use my 7,000# trailer but I can put two light tractors on it (like my RC and my wife's MM Avery V). My plan is to bring my G to the Ohio GOTO in the back of the truck. Should fit and haul well. I get about 15.8 mpg interstate unloaded.

I tow with my 1981 C10 and a 16' bumper pull trailer! I can only haul one tractor and implement at a time, and it does okay with the B, but the 8N and brushhog makes it squat pretty good! A load of bermuda square bales stacked 6 high really makes the rear drag!

various GM pickups with the 6.5L diesel and 5 speed manual. 3/4 and 1 ton, 2 and 4 wheel drive, etc. but they are all manual transmission, which IMO is why I have such great luck with the 6.5L

This particular one is a 1993 Chevy K2500HD 6.5L 5spd 4wd with 4.10s. bought with 238K on it, all original.

Getting ready to pull the west side of the rockies at 21,660 lbs (If I remember the weight correctly) Factory GCWR is only 14,500 IIRC. nothing like a few tons over gross. From a safety perspective, the reason the towing rating is so low is the acceleration. Identical truck with a 454 is 19K IIRC, so brakes are not the limiting factor.

http://s1290.photobucket.com/user/rborneman_08/media/1993%20Chevy%20K2500HD/100_2941_zpsba5ff896.jpg.html" rel="nofollow">

Another load, this one headed to California, pulled Donner Pass like a champ.

http://s1290.photobucket.com/user/rborneman_08/media/1993%20Chevy%20K2500HD/100_1360_zps56a11f72.jpg.html" rel="nofollow">

Due to not correctly timing a swapped in injection pump and driving blind with no EGT guage, I think I killed the motor with high EGTs at 269,000 miles on the original motor.

I have it sitting awaiting an engine, and I have bought since then a 95 GMC, identically speced, just equipped with the electronic injection pump and a few other minor changes that come with 95 over 93.
http://s1290.photobucket.com/user/rborneman_08/media/1995%20GMC%20K2500HD/100_4157_zpsfgvj2ruv.jpg.html" rel="nofollow">

Both the 93 and the 95 were one owner trucks when I bought them, 93 sold new in AZ, brought to SW KS, so completely rust free.

95 sold new and stayed in Akron CO its entire life, dumped on an consignment sale at Burlington, I assume fearing a cracked cylinder head due to overheating. Completely blocked radiator (external blockage, grass and weed seeds) was the cause, as it runs beautifully and tows well.

Believe it or not, the 95 has 431,000 on it when I bought it in December, and I am closing in on 437K so far, been out to California once, and I was over 20K pulling Donner both directions (found a backhaul with a JD 2440) and she handled it just fine. original engine went at 95,000 miles, so this is engine #2, and it runs great, no blowby.

The trailer is a 07 PJ 25 foot Deckover 14K, and while I like the overall design, the build quality leaves a little to be desired. Load Trail was a former business partner with the originator of PJ, and so alot of designs are similar, but the load trail seems to have a little bit better fit and finish, so I think we will try them next.

So if you buy a PJ, make sure and see if the welds are good or bad, and prepare to walk.

Also forgot, the big purchase of 2016 is the newest pickup I ever owned, a 2006 Chevy C3500 Duramax with the ultra rare ZF6 6 speed manual transmission ,11 ft chassis cab, 2wd. 154K on it when I bought it. rust free from SW Kansas.

There is a website specifically for the 3500HD (the one with 19.5 rubber and disc brakes on all 4 corners, which I assume yours is) at www.3500hd.com if you ever need any HD specific parts.

Also, www.leroydiesel.com for 6.5L specific parts. Heathdiesel.com and kennedydiesel.com are also decent.

Hello Chuck     I told the wife back in1999 that I needed a new pickup because i'ved never owned a new truck in my life,  ( 1999 F 450 diesel 4/4 )  A trailer that I could put my tractors in, with living area,  ( 42' tri axle 23' cargo 13' living) to go to the tractor shows.    Still have the truck and trailer coming up to 80,000 miles.  also bought a 22' deck goose neck 2 axle trailer, wasn't long enough for 2 wide tractors.   stretched it 4' and added a third axle, now 26' on deck.      Come see us at Union Grove in September  Fall Harvest Days Show   Allen
