Hey guys, Its been a while since ive been on, and i forgot my password so i had to make a new username and password, i used to be Allis Restorer. All right here is my problem, my D17 is making an odd grinding/ rattleing sound, It dose it when the clutch is pushed in and when it is out, but it make no noise when idleing but when you open up the throttle it grinds in what sounds like the transmission or the rearend, but when u have it in gear and when moveing it grinds like something is binding in the rearend. It started doing this while plowing snow. the tractor still moves ok but when in neutral with the clutch out or in the motor seems to run hard. if anyone could help me out it would be appreciated. My first guess is a bearing somewhere, if everything still moves ok, without the jerking or catching.

Easiest things to do are to pull the side inspection cover off the PD, and check around, use a mirror to see the bearings, check the PD plates, and collars, the next is to take the top off the tranny, and see what you see in there.  My guess is, if the engine is running hard, you will see bluing from heat damage on the part in question.

Well, if it makes the noise sitting still AND with the foot clutch pushed in or clutch out, the problem has to be in the engine or power steering pump or water pump or generator.

I know the it is coming from the rear of the tractor, because it makes a vibration that i can feel sitting on the seat, and the sound is coming from the rear. It dosent make a sound idleing or moving slow like in first gear but if you open the throttle it dose it or moving in a high gear. thanks

Im sorry it is just hard to explain what it is doing. Another thing that if have noticed for the first time yesterday when i was plowing snow, that it was leaking a fair amount of oil from the rear main seal on the engine. thanks Steve

What type of oil is leaking? Engine or hydraulic? Does it get worse when you push the clutch pedal in? Does it shift easily when running or does it grind gears? Is there any unusual vibration through the Power Director stick?

you have a broken crank,had a guy with d14, and thought he had rear end problems,thats where the vibration was felt, he had a broken crank it was hetween journals, also had a d17 that ran and had a broken crank

My father had a 53 Ford truck with the flat head V8. The engine ran but had a knock. He asked me what I thought it was so I listened to the engine using a piece of broom handle as a stethoscope and narrowed the noise to near the centre main. I told him that even though it seemed hard to believe I felt that it had a broken crankshaft. When they opened up the engine the crank had broke between the front and centre main bearings. You might want to try a stethoscope to narrow down exactly where the noise is coming from. If you don't have a stethoscope use a short piece of wood and hold it against your ear and try placing the other end against various areas of the tractor to try and narrow down the location of the sound.
