Subject: How do I get this bearing out?

Any suggestions on how to remove this roller bearing in the PTO housing on my B model? There's no way to get to it from the other side to drive it out and what ever puller it takes I don't have. It's the bearing that the end of the transmission main shaft fits into. I have removed the snap ring.
 As always, any help is greatly appreciated.

If you have a small two jaw bearing puller you could try reversing the jaws so that the claws are facing outward from each other, then place a good piece of flat steel (like a good sized crescent wrench laying flat) diagonally across the casting to provide a point for the puller's center screw to push on while the jaws are hopefully hooked into the inside of the bearing race. Just a suggestion. It looks like once you get this coming out it will not take too much force as long as it is being lifted evenly.

| Providing you are not going to reuse the bearing... Cut the roller cage and take out cage and rollers. Then weld a bead around the inside the outer race (taking care not get any weld out side the bearing race and not burn through) let cool completely and remove with fingers. The weld will shrink the race making it easily removed. Tim |

I have had many successes by welding a nut over the
inside race, Then. take a full thread bolt or a piece of
all-thread and screw it into the nut. This will jack the
old bearing out. John

| Since it doesn't have an inner race, cut the cage and remove the rollers. Welding the race half way works good. Your local auto store should have a loaner internal puller. You can also use the hydraulic method after removing the rollers, find round stock to fit bore. Fill back cavity with heavy weight lube and drive the stock down. Fluid will force the race out. |

Many thanks to you all for the great responses. I found a pilot bearing puller on line that I ordered. When it gets here I'll try that first. If that fails I'll try using my welder. In the meantime I'm keeping the bearing doused with PB blaster.

2 L shaped pry bars made from old screw drivers or such with the short part of L long enough to reach the edge of the outside race , then evenly applied pressure to both bars. A slide hammer works the best to remove a bearing in that position. Two slaps and its out! Then you have the bearing in whole to get the number off to order your new bearing. A tool rental store will have that tool pretty cheap to rent out.

At my age I should have known that there's a correct tool for every job. I found and ordered this bearing puller on Amazon on Monday and it arrived yesterday. It took just a couple of minutes to pop out the bearing. Thanks once again to all for the help.

Yep, multipurpose blind bearing puller. I have a slide-hammer puller... mine's from OTC, but Horror-Fright has 'em too, and they're okay. |

Bearing puller, slide hammer and/or heat. If you use heat make sure you don't get the casting to hot or it may break. ------------- Thanks & God Bless Dennis |
