was thinking has anyone ever planted rye in late winter and made hay off of it

I use rye as a cover crop/green manure for the veggie garden.Latest planting was mid Novemeber(it was still kinda nice...),it 'just' took before snow came 6 weeks later.By midApril it as up almost 2 feet,before I plowed it under.It sure helps the garden!

Now I leave one swath to 'justify' the Gleaner to use my own seed for next falls covering.

Uh make sure you get the right stuff. I planted what I thought was a winter covor for my garden and it turned my garden into a hayfield.

The latest we've planted rye was probably Nov. 1st. We have mowed it just prior to the grains developing and let it bleach out for straw. It doesn't have much nutritional value at that point but the cows usually did eat some when we bedded up the loafing shed. We currently mow rye early when it's still green, let it wilt, and round bale it for high moisture hay.

I planted Abruzzi Rye as green manure this past October and plowed it in a couple weeks ago. It's supposed to really build the soil. I'm gonna try Buckwheat for Spring/Summer green manure.

I've put winter rye in a few times when feed was short the summer before. Great beef cow feed. I cut mine and made baleage out of it. Cows thought it was candy and boy did they raise a ruckus when it was gone. After the 1st cutting I let it regrow and green chopped it off for the "girls". Then plowed it that fall and seeded down the next spring. Also worked good to break weed cycle-weeds didn't have a chance to go to seed before they were cut.

Common in SW Wi. to no till rye into harvested corn silage acres , in the fall . This helps retard erosion on our rolling hills . Like previously stated , it can be harvested , and used as a feed source for beef cows , but not much protein . The big dairys use it mixed with alfalfa to make a less hotter feed for their dry cows.
We did it back in the late 70,s ok , made round bales out of it in late may /early june , and no-tilled corn after harvest .

I'm not far from you, and I have had good luck with planting Oats about now. A few years ago I planted Oats on February 9th and had a fine crop of grain. Oats for hay should work out about the same. If I could get on the ground, I'd do it NOW though... Horse people like oat hay too if you are looking to sell any of it.
