I have two PTO’s I removed from two 1939 B models I parted out with intentions to rebuild one good one.  My problem is I cannot get the cam shaft pushed through the drive gear on either one.  Per the disassembly instructions in my manuals, I am using a puller that fits.  Even with my 200 lbs bearing down on a breaker bar, I cannot get either shaft to budge.

Is there something I’m missing here?  Can I use heat on these parts?  And if so, do I heat the shaft or the gear assembly?

As always, any help is greatly appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

Jim

mild heat should help, on gear only. You want to expand the gear so it will slide off of the shaft. Keep the puller on it.
The book shows a C clip, bearing , then gear. With the clip and bearing removed, the gear should come next. Good luck. Bob

Bob,
Many thanks for the response.  Heat did the trick.  Now if I can just figure out how to get that transmission main shaft roller bearing out I'll have it made.  Thanks again.

I wouldn't put very much heat on it. The shaft is pressed into the bearing. I just press them out. You can rig a bottle jack to press it out with some all thread and bar steel. Or find someone with a press. If you was close I would press them out for you. It only takes a coupla minutes.
