Hello all , new here and needing some expert advise. Have a chance to buy this ac 500 series forklift with some problems. Mainly it seems to be the starter. 12v system with no power to start they have had to boost from 24v system. A note : they have had the starter tested and confermed ok. the owners had said it is because the starter was for there gas engines and now its being used for the diesel. Any thoughts would be helpfull thanks

I have had a similar problem lately. It has turned out to be a combination of at least two reasons. There was a lack of proper ground connection, you can have some grounding but not a clean enough contact for all the amps to flow. In older equipment it can be in the cable ends etc. It can be a lack of grounding from the frame to the starter. I made a direct connection to the starter from a new battery with both positive and ground with GOOD cables. This gave power for sure to engage the starter but it was too weak to do the job. Taking the starter apart showed very poor connection between the brushes and the armature as well as the inside of the solenoid being in rough shape. A good clean up job can make all the difference between failure and success. On this forklift you mention with the starter 'tested", I wouldn't be satisfied with believing it to be "good" until it has been apart. If this is the starter meant for this model from new, it should start the engine unless there is another problem.
