I don't know about the head, but I just had the manifold milled on my D-17 gas and the guy charged me $75.00  Keep in mind that you can buy a new good quality  manifold for about $175.00

How bad are the exhaust ports? May be able to mill the head flat, instead of trying to build it up. I might be looking for a different head if it had to be built up??? I think some guys have gotten by with some form of epoxy, or liquid metal to build the head around the exhaust ports.
