Found a 7G FA early unit for sale on St.Louis Craigslist, $3800 as it seemed cheap I wrote to the owner.  It runs, barely, black smokes hard, he thinks the turbo is bad but did not know, track pins were turned when he got it and they are shot now, he was told the rails are worn too far and the pads show almost no grouser bars.  Big problem, it fails to steer after the oils warm up, just gets sluggish then only forward and backward.  Only positive I could see was the 4 way bucket, and it was mangled.  He plans to scrap if no sale.

I had to pass on that one.

Sounds like a major basket case but still it seems like a lot of area between $3800 and scrap price?

He can only get around 12-1500 for scrap for it here, and it has to be disassembled to get that much, thought of offering $2000 but it needs more than I have time for.

I can honestly say I would consider it for scrap value, but the big question would be why the steering slows to no function??  I can change rails and pads, even working the fuel system or rebuilding the turbo if that is a problem but the hydraulics scare the hell out of me.  Coke, do you consider this a "worthy" project at scrap price???

  This term "scrap value" get thrown arounds a lot here. The salvage value should take precedence here. Engine, trans, rams, pumps, etc. are the real value (and needs) to owners of the same model. The steering problem could be as simple as a filter restriction. Same with the running problem. I would say that if you're not a mechanic, probably should pass. If you buy it and decide to scrap it, call me. I need some parts. Cheers, Corey Chartier in KC.Smile

A lot of guys I hang with got into the scrapping gig, they tore through the old farms and machinery piles taking all they could to scrappers with little around here left for use or for salvage.  Seems all got the itch to sell off the "junk" to scrap with many old equipment and car yards I dealt with over the years completely emptying their lots.  Just doesn't seem right but so much of the salvageable machinery is gone now.  I am going to call him back and see what it will take to save this one.

Well, as usual, I spoke too soon.  Gent was out of town on business, I got the crawler for $3000 and have until my IRS deposit arrives to pay for it as he has had no other interested parties.  Best price on shipping is $3.40/loaded mile plus fuel surcharge.

Chartrand Tractor in Red Bud Il  has a torn down 7G, they do not have a track or a steering pump but have considerable other stuff for it as finals if needed and a 'functional' turbo.  Zimmerman in Versailles Mo has a few pieces but not much and Minnpar has quite a lot but at a price.

I am going to start with the simple side first, oils and filters/strainers, see what is hiding inside as to steering.  May have bad seals but could just be loaded up or watered, won't hurt to get fresh fluids into it if only to flush the muck before tear into.  I am having my 180 pump rebuilt at Capital Diesel, Holts Summit MO, they can also get a replacement turbo IF, IF I can get a series or manufacturers p/n off the old one.  I need to see what is wrong with this one first, may also be a fuel/fuel delivery issue.

I think its good to see old crawlers saved too; be they allis, cat, or cornbinders. In the US, NZ or elsewhere I can see in less than 10 years all these treasures will have gone to the cremotorium and we will all be cursing ourselves for not saving them
Fixed up most are still capable of a days work; and imho the days of buying new small dozers and getting enough work to survive and pay for one are long gone. So we just have to rebuild what weve got.
