Last month my boy rebuilt the engine in this WD45. The starter would bearly turn it, had the starter fixed, still no good. He took it back and they put in a high tourk windeing and specal ground, still no good. Took it back and they put in another winding and now it spins over on 6 volt like it was on 12 volts.
Wd45 on trailor, he took it to a neighbors and hooked up a feed grinder and ran a back of feed. Every thing is good now.

If an engine is rebuilt good and tight it will sometimes have to be pull started the first couple of times until it wears in. This is fairly common with old cars too ------------- red and green are nice for christmas, but orange is all year round http://www.canadianantiquetractor.com/tractorforum/ |

That is the orignel WD45 starter. They put a stud and lock nuts in place of one of the field screws.
It wouls start OK with a 12 volt boost, he wanted to crank good on 6 volt.

| i had the same problem on a wd45, 6 volt, started didnt work, found another laying on shelf and tried it and it splns over like nothing but it is made/shaped different and i didnt know how to hook starter rod up so took original to shop and they said it tested ok and nothing needed fixed so bought new cables off them made from welding cable and it still aint right..... will usually start right about when i quit pulling on starter loop |

JC, have your battery load tested. If you're still running 6 volts, remove any ballast resistors that might have been put on. The 6v coil should measure 1.5 ohms on the primary side. Check the starter bearings for wear. If the armature drags on he pole pieces it won't crank good. Gerald J. |
