I am having difficulty finding the timing marks on the flywheel of my WD45.  Are they on the surface that  faces the back of the tractor or the surface that faces the sides?  Thanks.

I could get corrected if I'am wrong! but they should be on the sides right behind the ring gear at the bottom inspection hole when on TDC #1 piston compre. stoke, may have oil, dirt, and clutch dust filling the marks, us a wire brush to clean the area and use soap stone that will show up in the mark.
Good luck, Big smileing John

Once you get all the dirt off the flywheel you should be able to see 2 marks. 1 for TDC and the other is F for fire. That "F" is 30 degrees so that is where you want it set but have your motor running 1/2 throttle or better.

There is no pointer to reference.Just have to get the F mark showing on bottom @ high idle.Expect it to move around a little. If it's got an old set of M&W's in it you'll want to back off a couple degrees. Spark knock will tell you.
