Thinking about getting a good but cheap ($10-15G) backhoe for some clean up jobs around the farm. What would be the best (most reliable) model from the late 1970s to mid 1980s? John Deere 310 or Case 580? Any other good ones? Thanks for the feedback!

I would by the Case. I think thier's seems better and are more popular. Plus you don't have to put up with the green prices. JMHO Tracy Martin

AC 715 / 715B , but not that many around to find , A 918 would work but is a large machine with 1 1/2 yd bucket. Depending on the area Case was popular in some areas and Ford in others , a 555 Ford was popular machine in its class. Early year TLB are going to show or have a lot of wear in the 30 to 40 year life .

I've used lots of 555 fords and they are good machines. Very common for parts. But, if I were looking for one I'd go with a 580 case. I like the 4 cyl. engine better and I think the torque converters were a little stronger. Also I'd get a 4x4 model and there are lots more Case 4x4's availiable. Extend a hoe is also a great feature.

case case case, 580C or newer, as they are componenent machines, and you can work on the transmission/ torque convertor and shuttle with out splitting the machine. They have a seperate frame. If you go for a Deere you want a C series or newer ( 310c 410 c ) and newer ( component machine). Older deeres are decent machine but hard to work on and have a complex closed center hydraulic system, that has a transmission pump that feeds the front pump and requires 2 splits on a backhoe to get at. Case is the simplist with a open center crankshaft driven pump. The old fords are good but id shy away from the torque converter machines, once again they arent a component machine and require a split to access and fix trans issues. but the ford 4500, etc and ford machines are a good value. Case is the easiest and cheapest to own, and have the best resale because of it.

Buy whatever you can get the best support for. Parts, Service, etc. That means a lot.

At work, we have a handful of 580 Super K's. Nice machine to work on, and according to our HEO's nice machine to run. Parts are readily available to. Whenever I need a service part for them, our Case dealer always has it or can get it in a day or so.

I've had an Allis-Chalmers 715B for 25 years and a 715 before that and a I-60 before that. They are one of the original componant machines. Perkins 236, B&B transmission, Ford rear end, JD twin stick controls, Case style swing cylinders. They said the took the best part from each of their competitors and built the best backhoe. This was a hard working machine diging silo foundations. Have spent absolutly nothing on it, but its getting tired and does only farm duty now. I think it was one of the best two wheel drive backhoes built.
If you could find a 715C it will have the A-C 433 engine. After A-C sold out it became a CDI or CDS and had a Cummins. Have a neighbour with a Cummins powered CDS forklift.

I Like my 816 but parts are getting harder to find. Wouldike to up grade to a Case 580 someday. Seems like there are a lot of them for sale at a fare price
