Is there packing that goes in the bottom of the cylinder under the adjustment screw? can it be replaced without taking the cylinder off? Thanks

Unsure of what the cylinder looks like , can you post a picture of the part or end you are describing. If it is a packing gland with bolts to draw it down it might be v ring packing and you can add another ring or add a spacer under the top ring . V ring packing can be cut at a bias angle and installed so you do not have to disassemble the full cylinder.

Looking in my parts book it shows a packing assembly with 7 rings of packing material. There is a stuffing box retaining nut and an inner nut that is the packing adjusting nut. Removing the outer stuffing box retaining nut would allow the whole assembly to be pulled out of the cylinder. The seal between the stuffing box and the cylinder is a rubber O-ring.
