This isn't Allis, but I bet someone on here can probably help me. On our JD 444A payloader, the transmission is giving us trouble. When it gets good and warmed up, the transmission pressure will suddenly go from running in the green, to nothing, and you will lose all forward or reverse function. Let it sit for an hour (or less if it is colder outside), and then it will work again. It is definitely a heat related problem, because on cold days it will work for a longer time before acting up. Also, if you aren't working it too hard, it'll go longer, sometimes all day if it is fairly cold out and just loading bales or something not too strenuous. JD dealer says the pump in the transmission is shot, and 10 grand will fix it. My only problem with that theory is that if the pump is bad, it shouldn't come back full strength, should it. If it were a pump drive issue, it would of quit and been done with for good. If the pump itself was wearing out, it should of slowly started running less and less pressure til nothing, and then not keep coming back either, right. Thanks in advance for any help. Darrel

Dont know the machines Darrel,  but agree if pump was shot, pressures would deteriate progressively, not suddenly. Anyone with experience with those transmissions, in particular, the pressure relief valve systems they have, could help.

Thanks for all of the replies, fellas. Can go chasing through cyber space for a while on that. Dnoym N. S. Can., I'm not sure if the transmission is an allison or not, but it is 2 speeds forward, and one reverse. Darrel

it sound like the allison
i will try to post a picture.you have
two oil level check plug they
are located at the lower-right front
you can see them in the picture
just above the drain plug next to
the screen cover plate with the six
bolts in it and they are about an
inch apart. to check the oil before
starting remove upper plug oil
should flow if not add till it dose
and replace the plug start the
engine and operate at 1500 rpm
in neutral 1 minute add oil till
level at the lower plug

low main pressure may be cause by
1  low oil level
2  clogged oil strainer
3  clogged oil filter
4  weak or broken main - pressure
regulator valve spring
5  inching control adjustment not
fully retracted
6  oil pump worn
7  air leak at intake side of oil pump
8  internal oil leakage
9  external oil leakage
10  brake hydraulic (or air ) pressure
applying clutch cutoff valve

Is that by chance one of those hydrostatic models, instead of the torque converter ones? I think a few years ago i had a 344 with the hydro that did the same thing. I ended up pulling the hydro and was able to get it going with actually very little money.

It is not a hydro, it does resemble the one in the picture

Darrel there should be a name plate
on the lower left side of the transmission
with serial number ,part number, and model
number if you can find them post them here
that will tell us for sure  may not be off brand
Ac  545 , ford 655 and i think jd 444
all used the same allison tranmission
back in the mid 60
