Hi folks - the steering gearbox on my Allis B does not hold lubricant anymore - it leaks like a sieve and it's been pretty tough to steer. For temporary use I put some grease in there, but now that my expected use of the tractor is done for the year, I've removed the whole steering section and would like to rebuild it.

For starters, is there a rebuild kit available? Or do I just go out an buy the seals and/or bearings that might be required? I don't have a parts manual for this tractor so don't have access to an exploded view of the gearbox to varify what all parts are necessary.

Also, in looking at my IT manual, it appears that I have the Gemmer gearbox, not the Ross. Is there a way to confirm this by serial number or is it pretty obvious which gearbox I've got (maybe the type is stamped on the gearbox itself and I will see it once the gunk is cleaned of)?

I have rehabbed a few gearboxes and have obtained the seals from Sandy Lake (they are listed in the parts link on this site). The bearings are NLA from AGCO; however, you may find some at a good bearing supply place. If the races in your gearbox are salvageable, the balls from a 6205 sealed bearing are the same size and can be used. I have found that the lower bearing normally has the worst corrosion on the race and end up swapping the lower and the upper bearings. There is a person (I think his name is Tracy Martin) who visits this site a lot who has machined the guide pin that goes in the wormgear. The Gemmer gear box has two guide pins whereas the Ross gearbox has only one.
