Now I found a D14 for sale that has been restored.  Here is a copy of the listing.  FOR SALE IS A ALLIS CHALMERS D14. THIS TRACTOR HAS BEEN COMPLETELY REDONE AND RECONDITIONED. NEW PARTS ARE AS FOLLOWS. ALL FOUR TIRES ARE NEW FIRESTONE TIRES. THE TRACTOR HAS TWO NEW FRONT RIMS. THE RADATOR WAS HEAT TREATED AND FLUSHED, ALSO THE TRACTOR HAS TWO NEW FRONT TIE RODS. THE MOTOR WAS COMPLETELY GONE THROUGH, NEW PISTONS, BEARINGS, BUSHING AND SLEAVES, THE HEAD WAS ALSO REDONE WITH NEW VALVES AND SEATS. ALSO NEW WATER PUMP , THE DISTIBUTOR WAS REBUILT WITH SOLID STATE TIMING. THE CARB WAS CLEANED AND A NEW KIT WAS INSTALLED, ALSO A NEW SETIMENT BOWL ON THE FUEL TANK. NO MORE POINTS TO GET WET OR CORODE! THIS TRACTOR WAS ALSO CONVERTED FROM 6 VOLT TO A NEW 12VOLT SYSTEM WITH A NEW BATTERY. ALL OF THE GAUGES ARE NEW WITH A FACTORY TACH. THIS TRACTOR ALSO HAS A NEW ALT WITH A POSITIVE CHARGE LIGHT. THE NEW MOTOR HAS APROX 3 TO 4 HOUR ON IT. THE TRACTOR RUNS AND DRIVES GREAT, THE PTO IS SET FOR 540 RPM. THE TRACTOR CURRENLY WAS A 2PT SYSTEM ON THE REAR BUT CAN BE CONVERTED TO 3 PT EASILY. NOT SURE IF I HAVE MISSED ANYTHING, IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTION PLEASE GIVE ME A CALL. THE PRICE IS $4200 OR BEST OFFER.

My question is would a d14 be enough tractor to cut, rake, and bale my 5.5 acres of hay given if I find a 7ft haybine and use an older (really old) small square baler.  I appreciated all of the info you guys gave me about the wd45 I was looking at for my small farm and look forward to hearing your advice on this one!  Thanks

Jesse, I know that when I was back at home on the farm we used a WD to run a New Holland 66 square baler and it did just fine, that included pulling the wagon behind also. The D14 is about the same rated horsepower as the WD so I think it would work out all right. That being said the two engines are quite different which could be a factor. We found that running the baler and chopper that ground speed was our biggest concern, the WD we found had to fast of a ground speed for our New Holland 616 chopper when it was wound up fast enough to chop corn properly, while the WD did just fine on the baler. Remember the D 14 essentially has high and low range so you have a much bigger choice of how fast you can run. Also the D 14 you are considering is on a fresh overhaul. The raking and mowing are not even a concern. For myself I would rather drive a D 14 or D 15 any day for doing field work than a WD or WD 45, yes I know many will get after me on that statement but don't get me wrong the WD and WD45 tractors are wonderful, I am just stating my preferance HTH

Thanks for the info.  I am going to call the guy and maybe try to check it out.  I have a day off next week so maybe I can pull a "jail break" from my list from the boss that day and go check it out!  Does the price seem about right for what it is.  It looks like they did a good job from the pictures with the new paint and all.

Does the trans stay in all gears? also does the hi/lo stay in ? two important items to check!

I just got off of the phone with the guy selling the d14 and he said that it won't stay in 3rd but all other gears work as they should and are tight.  He claims that he has a buddy that is an ex allis mechanic that he was going to have rebuild/fix the issue in the tranny but he told him it was a design flaw and not worth fixing.  Is this true?  Also how much is the fix?  I have heard alot about the 3rd popping out but not much on fixes for it.  Or can a guy just drive it without 3rd or will the rest of the tranny catch up and start popping out of gear also?  And how much would you guys try to get off of the price for the 3rd gear issue?  He also said that the high/low works good and stays put.  Thanks for any and all input!

My 14 has the same 3d gear problem.  Never heard of it being a design flaw before.  Did hear that most ground working was done in 3d and that probably wore it out.  Let's discuss this a bit, maybe we can get a bulk discount from AGCO on a bucket of 3d gears.

Do you know if it is a huge $ fix.  I would be tempted to just run it without 3rd for awhile if it wouldn't hurt the rest of the tranny.  Hopefully the guy will come down some for the trouble of having to fix it!

The gear is only the tip of what  it will need to fix it right. You'll come closer to 1500 for the tranny repair. Same thing as a D-15. Look up that topic in the forum and spend a few hrs doing some reading.

So I have been researching and have concluded from $1000-$1500 in parts ballpark.  But can you run one for awile without 3rd or will the rest of the tranny get smoked also?  The reason that I have been finding is 3rd was the most commonly used gear while plowing and that's why it wears out.  Is that usually the case?  I'm sorry for all of the dumb questions but I'm clueless to this and don't want to end up buying a money pit.

If he's trying to get 4200 for a "restored" tractor that 3rd gear wont stay engaged I'd shy away from it.....and a WD45 will do everything that D14 will do except have the hi/low power director and for alot less money....a WD45 can be picked up in super nice shape for 2500 bucks or less.

$1500 in parts plus probably that in labor. It won't hurt the tranny to use the other gears. The "flaw" is in the operator. If you grind it into gear, it will eventually round off the splines and won't stay in gear. If you push the clutch in, wait for the innards to stop turning, shift it into gear, the tranny will last a very long time. There are tractors out there that have never had a repair to the tranny and are still working fine. If the previous owner ground it into 3rd, he probably did the same with second and 4th so I would check them out by running the tractor downhill at full throttle and then idle it back all the way, putting back pressure on the shifting collar.
 The gear itself doesn't wear out, but the spline for the shifting collar does and it is part of the gear. Clear as mud I hope.

If it were me, I would ask if he has receipts for all of the other work that was done on it.   He states in the ad that it is completely redone and reconditioned but yet 3rd gear pops out.   Seems odd to me that you would do all that other work and then not go through the effort to ensure that the tranny is fixed as well.  Even with all new tires, 4200 seems high to me with the tranny issues.

3rd gear is an issue for several reasons, one being a more popular gear for work. Other issues are grinding into gear and overall abuse that most all equipment goes through at one time or another. The fine details are if the tranny is ever ran low on oil or just plain badly worn then the bearing collar's the gears ride on will seize inside the gear and spin on the main shafts. If this happens then the bearing clearance opens and all the collar's will float on the shaft as torque is applied and reduced. This "slop" along with grinding the gears where they engage will "walk" the tranny out of gear. This condition shows up first in 3rd gear but most all the gears are affected. It's up to your wallet and a trained eye as to how much damage is done over time and how much you'll have to repair when it's done right. Even some of the shift rails were not notched in the correct spot to allow for full gear engagement. All these little details will certainly affect the years of service the tranny will give you after it's been "repaired".
 
And Dave, yes I could have given the links but I just poped by the computer and gave an answer to the question. I figured anyone who really wants to know more details would be capable of finding the posts concerning the topic. If he has trouble finding them after he's looked then I'm sure the group would lend a hand.

There was a flaw in the original gears. They changed the design in later gears. If you look in a parts book they will say to replace third and reverse. That is because the pinion teeth changed slightly.
 
After market gears will run you five to six hundred. Then you have to consider whether you will do the work or pay someone. If you pay someone it will cost you more for labor since it is a job that requires splitting the tractor and removing the pinion shaft.
 
You will find that you do a lot of work in third gear. Fixing mine was one of the best things I did.

The D14 would be an ideal tractor to use for what you have planned for it, but the third gear issue does throw up a bit of a red flag, but not a complete end of the line for it. If it does in fact have everything done to it that the ad says, it easily has way more than $4200 into it. Having a D 14 myself with 3rd gear out, and desperately wanting to restore it, I do know that the first money that I would put into it would be fixing 3rd gear, so I can't quite figure them doing all of that to it without fixing the gear, however weather you fix the gear first or last I guess is irrelavent. I've used mine for about 15 to 20 years now without 3rd gear and have gotten a lot of work out of it at that, so to buy it with the intention of fixing 3rd in the future would be an option too. Thanks for all the info guys.  I think I might go look at it this weekend and probably end up insulting the guy with an offer, but I don't want to pay restored price and then have to stick another $2000 into it.  What would you guys be willing to pay for this tractor if everything else is as he says?  He has pictures in the ad and it looks like the tractor was at least painted nice but there's an awefull lot of thing that a guy can't see in a picture!

I think he is over priced, if it needs the tranny repaired, I would also question the other motor work he has done. Why would he "restore" a tractor that needs major transmission work?

there are plenty other better tractors out there, remember paint does not make a tractor run better...

Yes that is it.  I think I might just set this one out and wait for another one.  I have been seeing a ton of wd45's for around 1500 but they are all narrow fronts and I understand that wide front conversions are getting hard to come by.  Thanks

I've got 2 D-14s and both will 'pop outta 3rd when you let off the throttle' which is NOT a problem for me but I've only got 1 acre to play in ! If it is what the ad says, and you can here it running, test drive it, etc. I'd offer $3500.Myabe high to some, but it has nice fenders, Belt pully, tach, AND 4 NEW tires ! Rubber alone is over $1000 !New ignition setup is close to $150,fresh paint will quickly show any oil leaks. It'll more than do the chores you need it to do,is complete and it ORANGE !
