I experienced low charge & no starting on my recently purchased D-14. Had the battery tested at local NAPA store. Test shows a dead cell. Also found that the battery is an 8 volt. There was no date of sale indicated on the battery so have no idea of age or how long it has been in the tractor. My questions are: will an 8 volt battery harm a 6 volt electrical system? Will a bad cell prevent a battery from accepting and maintaining a full charge?

A 6 volt electrical system won't charge a 8 volt battery. I would go with a good 6 volt battery and make sure your starter and charging system are in good working order. On a 6 volt system its important to have the right size battery cable and make sure they are getting a good connection.

I use an 8 volt on my G with no problems. Charges and starts fine all summer, the 8 volt gives it a little extra kick over, she starts usually in the first few turns. I put the trickle charger on it once or twice over the winter as it doesn't get run at all. In the summer I do a lot of start up and run for less than 10 minutes as my rellies and friends like to see it run and take it for a short drive. I try to run it for at least 30 minutes as often as I can to keep the moisture out of the engine and the battery charged. Never have had the battery go deed, the generator charges it fine.

I think if you have one cell shorted out it will drain the others. Depends on the type of failure in that cell, I think anyway. I recently had a brand new 12v battery in my C that went bad in two weeks - low voltage, wouldn't take a charge and not enough power wouldn't turn the engine. Finally figured out it was the battery, took it back, got a new one, end of problem.
