Just fixed my steering.The Valve for the Shuttle Clutch foot shifter was stuck open.Was dumping all the pressure straight to the return line.Yanked it off,Capped off the return fitting,and installed a longer hose directly between the pump and the Relief valve.Got my steering!Now time to replace the tires on the steer axle.I can see air though the Canyons in the wide walls.Luckly they are standard 20 inch truck tires which I have a HUGE selection of.....Just gotta decide which ones.The Cooper Mud grip tread off my GMC General,The straight tread off the steer axle of the same truck,or maybe a pair of 900x20 NDT military tread.Thinking military tread since they are in slightly better shape and would look cooler.

Oh yea,Pulled the fitting on the valve and found it packed full of what looked like rubber chunks.Guess the old hose scattered inside and got sucked into the valve.

Common malady with old rubber lined hydraulic hose, good news as to the P/S back with smaller effort.

Yep.Grand total....$55 bucks.53 bucks and some change for a 36" 1/2" Hydro hose with female ends and one with 90degree plus buck and quarter for a Cap to cap off the port for the relief valve I chunked in the weeds.Wonder what I am gonna find when I replace the hydro filter.I got a brand new one to install.Bet it has a bunch of crap in it.But that is what a filter is for.Catch the crap.

Don;t forget to ad back the several hundred bucks for a new pump since you tossed the relief valve.

what year General??? Long hood ?short? detroit powered or Cummins is it a 5 star? late model with fiber door or steel, always wondered where all the General/ Bisons went cause you cant find them in a salvage yard.

It's a strange general.1980.Short hood,Aluminum frame,day cab,6V92 screamer,5 star but only has single headlights unlike most 5 stars.Factory Air starter.Single seat(factory.Got bracket for BIG extinguisher on passenger side).Fiber doors.single 100 gallon fuel tank.Was ordered by Amoco for tanker service so it was ordered as light as possible.

That is very unusual because a 5star should have had dual headlights all the cab trim, and running lights on the cab roof. I have a Bison which all Bisons were 5 stars but not all generals were. Dont know what it is abut a general but Ijust love the looks of them.Would like to find a long hood 5star with a cummins 400 in, or better yet a Big AL which I dont believe was ever installed in a general. Your is newer if it has the fiber doors. Mine is a 77 that we redid a few years back has a 8V71 right now but in a couple of months we are going to put a MAck in it I just cant take the noise anymore.

Yea,I think the 77 was the only year for the metal doors.It was a bring over quicky fix from the Cabovers.The next year they had the mold in full production and went to fiber.I need a drivers side door as mine is nothing but a skin.Someone cut everything out of it.No inside panel,Window mechanism,frame work,etc.Also need to find me a hood or atleast the very front nose section.The cables rotted off years ago and someone let the hood over-extend to the ground bending the metal frame at the bottom of the grill,distroying the fiber and causing the stainless trim to fall off and go missing.The truck is a real project.$1400 but has a fresh rebuilt engine.The entire wiring harness is shot.the air system was shot,the brake cans were shot,the bearings and seals in all the hubs were shot,the interior is gone(removed and a lot of the parts distroyed).But it runs great,shift great,and before I tore the axles down to replace all the bearings and seals ran down the road great......considering the tires were 20 plus year old Bias 10.00x20s on daytons.

My next project truck I want a 8V92 or 12V71 powered cabover.Nothing sounds as sweet as a buzzin dozen except maybe the GreenGoblins 8V92

General body parts are hard to come up with, I know that from when we redid the bison at that time we had a great GMC old school guy and he got me some of the trim pieces and interior parts that were missing, but no other parts guy would lift a finger to find a general part said everything wasnt available anymore. The wiring is actually an easy fix they have 3 main panels that subs everything out and once you undersatnd it its pretty simple, we redid alot of the wiring including all new panels, on mine. I need to get all the gauges working again and need to have the dash recovered somehow had some holes in it from the previous owner. I stripped the interior and took that to a car upholstery place and they redid it looks great, had to change the driver door to fiber, has twin stacks on it but the detroit even though it has a unique sound to it just is too damm loud, we can hear it coming from 2 miles away and thats not an exaderation, when it pulls out loaded I can tell you when it leaves the field and every corner it is coming to because of the jake brake!!!!!!

I bought a turbo set up for my 8V71 to try and kill some of the noise, but it wont fit the way the engine is mounted in the truck, if you know of anyone in need of a HUGE turbo set up for a detroit I have a new one off of a tank, gives it 585 hp. including the injectors. Was told it will fit an 8V71 or 92

I will go up stairs and look its all still in the crate, the waste gate is the size of a small coffee can, if your gonna blow a detroit, video it cause I always wanted to see one that went wild!!!!!!!!!!!!A tool guy that stops here at the shop use to be a detroit mechanic he said they had one go wild in there shop some one grabbed a phone book (2inthick) and threw it over the intake to kill it it sucked the book inside and finally killed it when it ran out of oil.

Buddy of mine came by yesterday to check out the lift and wanted me to fire up the Green Leaker(GMC General).Man that thing sound sweet.I have GOT to get it drivable.Wow a 6V92 straight piped sounds like satan himself.

As long as it has something then....

I drove a 6V92 turbo'ed for 10 years. Mean little bitch and you couldn't yell at the person next to you in the cab at 2200RPM. Finally put a huge muffler under the wrecker bed and it tned it out nicely with dual 5" pipes. Ran great and pulled like hell with a 13 over behind it good up to 60,000LB's.

We have an 88 5 Star General Firetruck in my station. Long hood, twin headlights, steel doors. 300 Cummins w/4 speed allison auto behind it. Smoothest driving firetruck you've ever been in. Really goes down the road well.

88 5 star was the end of an era, does it have the set back axel which would put square headlights in the hood or is it regular with the round headlamps.
