Nice straight looking tractor. If I read it right, you have what is known as a late series 2. Early series 2 had a black bar grille with silver mesh, the D17 decal on the side sheets you're missing, and silver "ALLIS-CHALMERS" lettering on the hood. It's a kinda complicated to sort out all the changes in the D17 over the 10 years or so they built them. I have one just like it.Love the NF.Never had one in the past but quickly am becoming a convert.Turns easier and looks better.Tires look OK, fly wheel base minus pulley is a plus,How much? Brian,
I believe the "black Bar" D-17 was referred to as the black bar Series I and still retained the Persion Orange color including the rear wheel centers and front wheels.
The Series II was painted Persion Orange #2 with cream colored rear wheel centers, front wheels and grill (with no bars).
You're right, the D-17 model designations can be a bit confusing.

BTW, Charlie, Your D-17 looks really good with all that nice straight sheet metal.
I have a '61 Series II (WFE) Ser.# 34633 but she doesn't look anywhere near as nice as yours as it had been rolled once by the P.O. and the sheet metal (including the gas tank) is in pretty rough shape. The D-17 sure was a "step up" from my WD and WD-45s.
Just curious; do you have the factory snap-coupler 3PH adaptor for your tractor?
I see you have the toplink bracket and what "might be" a factory top link with the hand wheel broken off.

Brian G. I believe you are correct on the series I and II differences. The bar grill were just a late series one. Series II debuted in 1960 with the PO2 and creme wheels. Very nice looking D-17 by the way.

Brian, I did get the 3 Pt adapter with the tractor, I have no idea if the top link is OEM or not. Not sure if you can tell but someone cut two holes in the seat bracket to mount a Top link there, I guess they required a higher hooking location. I am amazed at the power it has. I compare it to Dad's D15 and 10 HP makes a huge difference. I am still in need of help with the front pedestal shimmy. I replaced the lower bearing and seal which were shot, made sure the coupler matched the lower and upper shafts and had no play, but I have slack in the gear mesh in the power steering unit. I checked the gears for wear when I had it apart and I did not see any wear. If I have the front lifted up I can rotate the wheels side to side maybe 1/2 inch each way from center before it catches. Can the Ram shaft be adjusted in to take up slack? As this is where it seems the slack is. You have an OEM top link for the 3 pt adaptor but the cast adjusting wheel has been broken off. ------------- Nothing is impossible if it is properly financed |

 That appears to be the factory top link bracket for the Series I, II & III D-17.
BTW, the reason they call it a "Bracket for P.T.O." is that the other version of the 3PH adaptor places the top link bracket on a bar between the lower arms which precludes the use of PTO powered equipment but does allow full use of the traction booster feature.

| Charlie, on the power steering rack on the right side of the bolster underneath the cowling sheetmetal there is a plate about 4 inches square with 4 flathead bolts in it. If you take that plate off you can remove some of the shims to bring the rack up tighter to the gear if that will help. HTH |

Overall, that's a fine looking D17. All the panels look to be in good shape. A little elbow grease and it should look like new in no time. How's the engine running on it?

Does anyone know where I can get the center handwheel replacement for the top link? Verne, yes it does run pretty good although I have nothing to at my house that will test it. I'm pulling in the 5,000lb class tonight so I will get to see how much umph it has. Got there late, the pull order was not the same as posted on the web at sign up and we were up first so I had to run around unloading and didn't get to take any pictures. Track was tight, I elected to pull 1st gear which it hummed along OK in, only pulled back to low at the end and it was still powering through it as I spun out. 2nd would have been to much though. Last 10' I hit the same spot as many of the previous pullers and it pulled hard right to the line. I guess I made a bad line choice. Front danced a little as I only had my B rear weights on the back. Weighed in at 4700 I forgot to lower my PSI as my dad said the rears never buckled so I am sure that would have helped. Right wheel slipped on the ecentrics and tucked all the way so I need to take them off and get them freed up. It was funny as the announcer keep saying "now this is a great STOCK tractor and wished there were more of them". Pulled against: WD45 with 301 Diesel (Winner) JD A (Hopped up) JD A (unstyled) (Hopped up) WD-45 (I think this had a E also) Farmall M (it lopped along until it hit load and wow it had HP) WD-45 (Gleaner E) Farmall Super M Ford 4000 Diesel with Turbo Ford 5000 Diesel with Turbo WD-45 (stock) ------------- Charlie '48 B, '51 CA, '56 WD45 '61 D17, '63 D12, '65 D10 , '68 One-Ninety XTD |
