Have been reading the posts and got a new side exhaust manifold, also now know to use antiseize on the studs that go in the block and permatex on the ONE stud that goes into the water, my new question is why are some studs longer that others?

Look at the manifold. Four of the studs go through ears which are closer to the head than where the other two studs go.
