When draining the final drives i think the manual says there is a cork gasket in there.  Is it best to get a replacement gasket or just use RTV sealant?

I use new cork gaskets; readily available at your AGCO dealer (or Sandy Lake Implement/Dean Ag). Use a non hardning sealer (RTV) on the pan side then you are ready to change the fluid next time.

Either or. They both work.
Your choice.

If you use RTV put a good bead on so when the pan is bolted up it spreads even with no voids.

Another RTV trick is to barely tighten the bolts with you fingers. Just enough to spread the sealant. Then the next day after it has cured do the final torque. That way you will be able to put pressure on the form in place gasket. If you torque up right away the seal will depend on adhesion only.

I have started using the grey RTV and the instructions is to finger tight , then 1 hour later tighten. My problem is to comeback 1 hour later. My memory is not the best.

Don't worry about the hour, next day is better anyhow.

In my VW manual where a lot came from the factory with RTV beaded in place they note a common detail. Always pass a bolt hole with the bead on the oil side of the surface, not outside the bolt, else the bolt will leak.

So that's why my neck is always wet.
The bolts in my neck are leaking.

That is true.  I worked as a mechanic in dealerships for 4-6 years.  When ever I do differential covers I always lay the bead to the inside oil side then go back and make a full circle around the bolt.

I used Permatex 81182 Gear Oil RTV sealant on the finals of my WD last summer, got it from NAPA. I would suggest going that route as it gives you a positive seal compared to dry cork, and as little as you change gear oil anyway it's not that big a deal to disassemble.

I like the RTV system also, the cork wasn't that great to start with

Laying out the bead on the surface and then smooth it out well so there is a thin even film, then wait about 15 to 20 minutes for it to skin but not full cure , this has worked well for me .
Seems a lot of users run a bead like they are calking a window then tighten it up which makes a mess as the excess fallis into sealed area and migrates into fluid and bearings.

You have to use common sense on the size of the bead. If you spread it out too thin then when it is compressed sometimes it leaves a void.

This is also a good choice.
